En
1960, Muriel Catherine llegó a Burgos procedente de París. Era una estudiante
de 18 años de edad, hija de padre judío y madre protestante, estaba ansiosa de
aprender español.
Algunos
amigos le dieron la dirección de Ascensión (Chon) de Luis, una mujer joven que
vivía sola en su departamento y con quien la francesa podría quedarse por un
par de meses.
El
sábado siguiente a su llegada, Chon observó un velo en la valija de Muriel.
Inmediatamente asumió que era Católica y le preguntó, "¿a qué hora iremos
a misa mañana?". Ya que Muriel no entendía mucho de español y menos lo
hablaba, sintiéndose un tanto tímida en este nuevo ambiente, no pudo explicarse
fácilmente.
Conversion of Muriel Catherine
In 1960, Muriel Catherine arrived in
Some friends had given her Ascensión (Chon) de Luis’s address, who was a young woman living alone, and with whom the French girl could stay for a couple of months.
The Saturday after her arrival, Chon observed a veil in Muriel’s suitcase. She immediately assumed the girl was Catholic and asked her: “What time should we go to Mass tomorrow?” Muriel did not understand much Spanish and spoke even less. She was feeling shy in the new environment, so she could not explain well.
Al
día siguiente fueron a Misa. Chon procuró que la recién llegada se sintiera
como en casa, con toda libertad. Le explicó que tendría la oportunidad de
aprender algo sobre el Catolicismo si ella lo desease y conocer muchachas de su
misma edad.
Muriel
iba a descubrir que estas jóvenes católicas podían ser profundamente religiosas
y al mismo tiempo disfrutar del baile y la natación. También descubriría que
ellas visitaban a los pacientes pobres en los hospitales.
The next day, they went to
Muriel was going to discover that these young Catholic girls could be profoundly religious and at the same time enjoy dancing and swimming. She would also discover that the girls visited poor patients in the hospitals.
El
principio de la Conversión.
En
Burgos, Muriel Catherine fue presentada a los Padres Carmelitas, con quienes
tomó mucha confianza desde un primer momento. Ellos le proveyeron de un libro
sobre Santa Teresa de Lisieux, el cual leyó, y Chon la instruyó sobre la Fe
Católica. Muriel respondía favorablemente, y un día, arrodilladas juntas frente
a la imágen peregrina de Nuestra Señora de Fátima, rezó su primera Ave
María.
Por
el tiempo en que Muriel debía retornar a Francia, ya estaba interesada en
convertirse al catolicismo y se lo comentó a sus padres. Le contestaron que
ella era libre de decidirlo cuando cumpliera la edad de 21 años.
Chon
seguía sosteniendo correspondencia con Muriel, quien, en Julio de 1961, hizo
una segunda visita a Burgos, esta vez con la firme intención de Bautizarse a
los 21 años.
The Beginning of the Conversion
In
By the time that Muriel returned to
Chon continued corresponding with Muriel, who made her second
visit to

Un
día, Muriel pidió a su amiga un pequeño Crucifijo. Chon, no pudiendo encontrar
uno en su departamento, decidió ir a una joyería y comprárselo.
Estando
allí, se enteraron de los sucesos que estaban ocurriendo en un pueblo llamado
San Sebastián de Garabandal, en Santander. Chon pensó: "¿Podría ser
decisivo en la conversión de mi amiga?", y así partieron para Garabandal,
ambas movidas por la Fe y la Esperanza.
Llegaron
a Garabandal el Domingo, 27 de Agosto, pero su primera impresión no fue buena.
Había por allí algunos forasteros que parecían estar solo interesados en
divertirse, lo que había hecho a un cura Salesiano comentar que más daba la
impresión de que fuera el diablo el que estuviera apareciéndose antes que la
misma Virgen.
First Ascent to Garabandal
One day, Muriel asked her friend for a small Crucifix. Chon could not find one in her apartment, so she decided to go to a jeweler and buy one.
While they were there, they learned about the events that
were occurring in a village called San Sebastián de Garabandal, in
They arrived in Garabandal on Sunday, August 27, but the first impression was not a good one. There were some strangers there who only seemed interested in having fun, which made a Salesian priest comment that it would seem more like it was the devil appearing rather than the Virgin.
Al
día siguiente, dos de las niñas videntes y sus familias, afectadas por lo que
el sacerdote había dicho, prepararon una pequeña botella de agua bendita para
arrojarla a la aparición la próxima vez que se presentara, por si fuera el
diablo. Jacinta y Mari Loli guardaron celosamente su pequeño frasco de agua
bendita.
Esa
noche, Muriel y Chon entraron en la casa de Jacinta; estaba Jacinta con sus
padres, Loli con los suyos y el Padre Valentín Marichalar, el Párroco del
pueblo. Chon habló brevemente a las dos niñas de 12 años sobre la situación
religiosa de Muriel, les pidió que rezaran por ella, y les dejó su propio
rosario.
No
mucho después, Jacinta y Loli entraron en éxtasis. Mencionaron en su hablar
susurrante que un cura había venido y les había dicho que se trataba del
demonio, y con expresión de tristeza y temor, le contaron a la Visión que le
arrojarían agua bendita para que se alejara, si era el diablo.
Sin
embargo, sus expresiones cambiaron de tristeza a alegría y sonreían felices
mientras tiraban el agua bendita a la Santísima Virgen.
The next day, two of the seers and their families, affected by what the priest had said, prepared a small bottle of holy water to throw at the apparition the next time it came, to see if it was the devil. Jacinta and Mari Loli jealously guarded a small flask of holy water.
That night, Muriel and Chon entered Jacinta’s house. Jacinta was there with her parents, and Loli was with her parents and Fr. Valentín Marichalar, the pastor of the village. Chon spoke briefly with the children about Muriel’s religious situation, and asked them to pray for her. Then she gave them her own rosary.
Soon after that, Jacinta and Loli entered into ecstasy. They mentioned while whispering that a priest had come and said it was a demon, and with an expression of sadness and fear, they told the Virgin that they were going to throw the holy water at her so she would go away if she was the devil.
However, their expressions changed from sadness to joy and they were smiling happily while they threw the holy water at the Most Holy Virgin.
¡Ella
no es Católica!
Las
dos niñas estaban sentadas sobre taburetes de cocina frente a Chon y Muriel, y
sostenían los artículos religiosos que les dieron para que la Bendita Virgen
los besase. Se les escuchó esta vez claramente diciendo:
─
“Ella no es católica... no está bautizada... ven, ayúdala... ¡oh, a causa de
sus padres!”
Permaneciendo
en el mismo tema por un tiempo.
She is not Catholic!
The two girls were sitting on stools in the kitchen in front of Chon and Muriel, and they held religious articles so they could give them to the Blessed Virgin to kiss. They said in a clear voice:
─ “She is not Catholic… she is not baptized… come, help her… oh, because of her parents!” They stayed on this same topic for a while.
Chon de Luis, a la derecha, reza en
los Pinos con Loli, a la izquierda, y Conchita, en el centro. Después de su
primera visita a Garabandal con Muriel, Chon regresó varias veces y fue testigo
de muchos éxtasis.

Siguen
los diálogos de las niñas:
Después
comenzaron a ofrecer a la Virgen los objetos que llevaban. Sin bajar la cabeza,
tomaban los objetos uno a uno y los daban a besar a la Virgen.
Cuando
llegó el turno del rosario de Chon, ella las escuchó decir:
─
“¡Oh, con este rosario ella aprendió a rezar! ... dijo su primera Ave María con
él.”
Loli
se mantuvo repitiendo esto, lo bajó y lo puso entre los otros objetos
religiosos. Jacinta lo tomó, lo levantó y dijo otra vez:

After this, they began to offer the Virgin the objects they were carrying. Without lowering their heads, they took the objects one by one and gave them for the Virgin to kiss.
When they arrived at Chon’s rosary, Chon heard them say:
─ “Oh, she learned to pray with this rosary! She said her first Hail Mary on it.”
Loli repeated this and lowered it and put it between the other religious objects. Jacinta took it, lifted it, and said again:
─
“Su primer Ave María... su primer Ave María.”
Finalmente,
lo puso sobre las rodillas de Loli junto con los otros objetos. Chon se
encontraba emocionada. Una vez que las niñas terminaron de ofrecer los objetos
para ser besados, se les escuchó decir:
─
“¿Ahora?, ¡bien!”
Jacinta
tomó, tras su taburete, el frasco con el agua bendita. Luego lo destapó y con
fuerza lanzó su contenido hacia arriba, delante suyo.
Chon
describe lo que pasó después:
─
“El agua no siguió un curso normal. No cayó encima mío que estaba sentada
precisamente frente a ella. Más bien, haciendo una curva misteriosa, cayó, como
una pequeña lluvia, sobre Muriel.”
─ “Her first Hail Mary...her first Hail Mary.”
Finally, Loli knelt next to the other objects. Chon was very emotional. Once the girls finished offering objects to be kissed, they were heard to say:
─ “Now? Good!”
Jacinta took the flask of holy water, which was behind her stool. She opened it and threw it up in front of her.
Chon describes what happened later:
─ “The water did not follow a normal course. It did not fall on me even though I was sitting in front of the girl. It made a mysterious curve and fell like light rain on Muriel.”
El
Padre Valentín, quien estaba detrás de Muriel, me aseguró que ni una simple
gota había caído en él.
Nos
recostábamos la una en la otra a causa de la emoción, puedo también testificar
que nada del líquido cayó sobre mí.
Al
contrario, Muriel sintió este "baño" misterioso no solo en su cabeza,
sino también en su vestido y aún en sus pies. "Sí, me empapé," dijo.
Esto era verdaderamente notable, ya que el frasco era muy pequeño y ni siquiera
se encontraba lleno.
Era
la señal de que la Virgen quería que Muriel se bautizase.
Un
poquito después, vimos a Loli ansiosamente buscando algo mientras repetía:
─
“el suyo, el suyo... ¿dónde está el suyo? Es
muy pequeño.”
Fr. Valentín, who was behind Muriel, assured us that not a single drop had fallen on him.
We leaned on each other because we were so emotional, but I can also testify that none of the liquid fell on me.
To the contrary, Muriel felt this mysterious “bath” not only on her head, but also on her dress, and on her feet. “Yes, it soaked me,” she said. This was truly noteworthy, since the flask was very small and it wasn’t even full.
It was a sign that the Virgin wanted Muriel to be baptized.
A little later, we saw Loli looking for something anxiously while repeating:
─ It is hers, it is hers…where
is hers? It is very small.
Finalmente,
en esta cocina pobremente iluminada y como si su mano estuviera siendo guiada,
recogió una estatuilla de Nuestra Señora de Lourdes de dos o tres centímetros
que yo les había dado.
Estoy
segura, a causa de la luz escasa que había, que no la podría haber encontrado
si su mano no hubiera sido guiada.
Loli
levantó la estatuilla para que fuera besada, pero aún alargando el brazo todo
lo posible no pudo alcanzar a la Virgen, ni aún pudo llegar a sus pies.
Jacinta
entonces se puso de pie, levantó a Loli por sus rodillas sin el mínimo esfuerzo
y la elevó como si fuera una pluma. Todos estos movimientos fueron hechos con
gran delicadeza, sus rostros resplandecían con una inefable felicidad.
Finally, in the dimly lit kitchen, as though her hand had been guided, she reached for a little statue of Our Lady of Lourdes that was about two or three centimeters in size, which I had given to her.
I am sure because of the bad light, that she wouldn’t have found it if she hadn’t been guided.
Loli lifted the statue so it could be kissed, but even though she stretched her arm as far as she could, she could not reach the Virgin, not even as far as her feet.
Then Jacinta stood up and lifted Loli by her knees without the least bit of effort; she lifted the girl as though she were a feather. All of these movements were made with great delicacy, and their faces were resplendent with an indescribable happiness.
Loli
dijo:
─
¿Debo dársela a ella?... ¿debo ponerla en su bolsillo?
Entonces,
se aproximó a Muriel y Loli, muy cuidadosamente, puso la estatuilla dentro del
bolsillo de Muriel.
Las
dos pequeñas se pararon frente a Chon y Muriel y se inclinaron hacia ellas como
haciendo reverencia, pero de tal modo que parecían ir en contra de las leyes de
gravedad, todo esto con gracia y naturalidad.
Después
Loli, sin retirar sus ojos de la Virgen, empezó a inclinar su cuerpo hacia
Muriel, hasta el punto de apoyarse casi encima de ella en una posición
imposible de sostener y sin el más mínimo movimiento que indicara una pérdida
de equilibrio.
Loli said:
─ “Should I give it to her? Should I put it in her pocket?”
Then, she went near Muriel and Loli put the statue in Muriel’s pocket very carefully.
The two girls stopped in front of Chon and Muriel and they leaned towards them as though in reverence, but in such a way that went against the laws of gravity; it was graceful and natural.
Afterwards, Loli did not move her eyes from the Virgin, but she began to incline her body towards Muriel, until she was almost leaning over the girl in a position that was impossible to sustain. Yet, she did not show the least movement to indicate that she was losing her balance.
Finalmente,
las niñas decían a la Virgen:
─
“¿Aquí, debemos rezar aquí?”
Recitaron
entonces una "estación" a Jesús Sacramentado.
Este
éxtasis duró más de media hora. Chon finaliza su testimonio de esta manera:
Vimos
la despedida, ellas presentaron sus mejillas para que las besase la Virgen,
primero una de las niñas y luego la otra, mientras decían con ansia:
─
“¡No te vayas tan pronto... quédate un poquito más!”
Finally, the girls said to the Virgin:
─ “Here, should we pray here?”
Then they recited a Station to Jesus in the Sacrament.
This ecstasy lasted for more than a half hour. Chon finishes her testimony in this way:
“We saw how they said goodbye; the girls presented their cheeks for the Virgin to kiss, first one of the girls and then the other, while they said anxiously:
─ ‘Don’t go so soon…stay a little longer!’”
Simón,
padre de Jacinta, dice de este episodio:
“Vino
una judía aquí, Catherine, con una de Burgos. Los padres era judíos, no eran
católicos ninguno y ella, la hija, quería bautizarse. Venia aquí durante las
Apariciones y siempre venía a mi casa con la de Burgos que se llamaba
Chón(Asunción).
María
estaba con miedo de si sería el demonio que se aparecía. Le dio a Jacinta y a
Loli una botella de agua bendita y les dijo:
─
‘Cuando tengáis Aparición se lo echáis a la Visión.’
Cuando
tuvieron Aparición, le echaron el agua bendita, pero el agua bendita no fue
hacia la Visión sino que giró en sentido contrario y fue a caer donde estaba la
judía. Era la señal de que la Virgen quería que se bautizase.”
Simón, Jacinta’s father, says about this episode:
“A Jewish girl came here, named Catherine, with a woman from
María was afraid that it could be the devil that was appearing. She gave Jacinta and Loli a bottle of holy water and said to them:
─ ‘When you have an Apparition, throw it at the Vision.’
When they had an Apparition, they threw the holy water at it, but it did not go toward the Vision; it turned in the opposite direction and fell over the Jewish girl. It was a sign that the Virgin wanted her to be baptized.”
Dice
María, esposa de Simón:
Resulta
que yo no acababa de comprender estas cosas. Era lo primero de las Apariciones
y yo le decía:
─
Jacinta, estaba también Mari Loli, tengo aqui un botelluco de agua bendita.
Cuando tengáis Aparición, por si acaso es el diablo, le tiráis agua bendita
para que se vaya.
Entonces
tuvieron Aparición y se pone Mari Loli a tirar el agua bendita a la Aparición.
La judía traía una blusa blanca. Se pone a echar el agua y le cae toda a la
judía que estaba cara al otro lado.
Después,
ya normales, le decía Chón. “A ver Jacinta, siéntate en esa mesa y, con agua
natural, ponte a echarlo a ver donde cae.” Y le caía delante de los pies pero
aquella agua bendita fue para donde estaba la judía, no cayó enfrente.
María, Simón’s wife says:
I do not understand these things. It was the first of the Apparitions and I said:
─ Jacinta and Mari Loli, I have a little bottle of holy water here. When you have an Apparition, throw the holy water at the Vision, so if it is the devil, he will go away.
Then they had the Apparition and Mari Loli went to throw the holy water at the Apparition. The Jewish girl was wearing a white blouse. She threw the water, but it landed on the Jewish girl, who was on the other side.
Afterward, when they were in the normal state, Chon said to her: “Jacinta, sit at the table and throw normal water to see where it lands.” It landed at her feet but the holy water had fallen over the Jewish girl, not in front.

El
Bautismo de Muriel.
Después
de haber conocido a Chon, el hermano de Muriel les dijo a sus padres que
deberían permitir a Muriel regresar a Burgos donde era tremendamente feliz.
Dieron su consentimiento y en 1963, vino de vuelta a aquella ciudad española.
Por
sus cartas, Chon sabía que Muriel rezaba todos los días. Muriel ya había
decidido que quería hacerse Católica y el 20 de Octubre de 1963, el Bautismo
tuvo lugar en la Catedral de Burgos.
Para
su nombre bautismal, eligió "María del Carmen" lo cual Conchita había
sugerido con insistencia. La ceremonia fue presidida por el Padre Ramón María
Andreu S.J., hermano del finado Padre Luis Andreu.
Muriel’s Baptism
After meeting Chon, Muriel’s brother told his parents that
they should let Muriel return to
Through her letters, Chon knew that Muriel prayed every
day. Muriel had already decided to become Catholic and on October 20,
1963, the baptism took place in the Cathedral in
She chose “María del Carmen” for her baptismal name, which Conchita had suggested insistently. Fr. Ramón María Andreu presided. He was the brother of the deceased Fr. Luís Andreu.
Muriel
dijo:
─
“Sentí una paz interior como nunca la he sentido antes.”
Recibió
su primera Santa Comunión en las Teresianas y un almuerzo festivo fue servido
por las Esclavas, donde recibió pequeños obsequios de todos los que asistieron,
incluyendo el de Máximo Foerschler cuya conversión del Protestantismo estaba
también directamente relacionada con Garabandal.
Al
día siguiente, Muriel y Chon fueron a la iglesia de los Jesuítas, a la capilla
contigua de la Virgen de Fátima para hacer una visita de acción de gracias.
Muriel said:
─ “I feel an interior peace like nothing I have ever felt before.”
She received her first Holy Communion with the Teresians and had a festive lunch served by the Slaves [of Mary], where she received small gifts from all who attended, including Máximo Foerschler, whose own conversion from Protestantism had been directly related to Garabandal.
The next day, Muriel and Chon when to the Jesuit’s church, to the chapel of the Virgin of Fatima to make a visit and give thanks.
Fue
aquí donde Muriel, por primera vez, entregó su alma y corazón a Jesús y María.
Después, retornaron a casa y fueron a la habitación de dibujos de Chon, donde
ella conservaba unas pocas ramas de los pinos de Garabandal, secas y pequeñas,
que ya tenían un año, y cuyos últimos vestigios de fragancia podían solamente
detectarse sosteniéndolas bien cerca de la nariz.
Entrando
a la habitación, sintieron un fuerte aroma a pinos que llenaba toda la
habitación. Chon y Muriel entendieron que esto era una señal de que la Virgen
estaba feliz.
Muriel
permaneció en Burgos por casi dos años enseñando Francés en una escuela
regentada por las hermanas Salesianas. Sus Padres aceptaron su bautismo y
vinieron a Burgos donde Chon de Luis los recibió en su casa. Se sorprendieron
ambos de hacer tan rápido una amistad mutua.
It was there that Muriel gave her heart and soul to Jesus and Mary for the first time. Afterwards, she returned home and went to Chon’s room of pictures where Chon had saved a few branches of the Pines at Garabandal, dried and small, which she had had for a year. The last bit of fragrance could only be detected when the branches were very close to the nose.
When they entered the room, they felt a strong aroma of pines that filled the entire room. Chon and Muriel understood that this was a sign that the Virgin was happy.
Muriel stayed in

28 de Junio de 1969, los padres de Muriel estaban presentes cuando ella y
Eleuthere, propietario de un restaurante Griego en la Cuadra Latina, se casaron
como matrimonio católico.
Hoy,
Muriel Catherine vive en un suburbio de París con su esposo ortodoxo griego,
Eleuthere, y sus dos hijos, ambos bautizados católicos, Jean Emmanuel y
Christine Marie.
On June 28, 1969, Muriel’s parents were present when she and
Eleuthere, owner of a Greek restaurant in the
Today, Muriel Catherine lives in a suburb of
Muriel Catherine con sus dos hijos.

Cuando
Muriel llegó a Burgos en 1960, no podía imaginar que tres años después
regresaría otra vez a esa misma ciudad para ser Bautizada en la Iglesia
Católica en la Catedral de Burgos y todo ello por la intercesión de Nuestra
Señora del Carmen de Garabandal.
When Muriel arrived in Burgos in 1960, she could not imagine that three years later she would return to this same city to be baptized in the Catholic Church in the Cathedral of Burgos, all this through the intercession of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Garabandal.
