I have known the girls since they were small and I also know their families. They were like all of the other girls of the village: they went to school and did their chores with their parents. They were kind, attentive, and normal in every sense, but I believe they have had a special grace since the Apparitions.
When the first Apparition happened, I thought it was a fairytale the girls had made up. It was said that they could have seen a large bird, or something that frightened them. They spoke like this from the first day. The girls came down, very impressed and saying that they had seen an Angel.
A
The
next day, Monday, I had a small job in the house of Aniceta, who was Conchita’s
mother. In the morning I went to my job, but I didn’t dare ask her mother
or brothers anything about what Conchita had seen.
After an hour and a half of working with Aniceto, one of Conchita’s brothers, I saw the three girls meet there: Conchita, Mari Loli, and Jacinta; Mari Cruz took a little longer to come, but the four of them did meet.
Empecé
a meterles miedo, para saber la verdad.
─
“Oye niñas, ¿qué habéis visto?”
─
“Hemos visto un Ángel.”
─
y a tu papá y a tu mamá.”
dije:
I began to frighten them, so I would know the truth.
─ “Hey, girls, what have you seen?”
─ “We have seen an Angel.”
─ “You’re going to go to jail. They have told the Civil Guard, and they are going to take you to jail along with your parents.”
The girls remained calm, and were not the least bit frightened. They said to me:
─ “Well, they can take us and our parents to jail, but we have seen the Angel.”
Then Conchita’s brother became angry, since he didn’t want them to talk about this, and I said:
─
unos ocho a diez.
Garabandal. Le pregunté a la niña:
─“Oye,
pero ¿qué habéis visto?”
No
se asustaba nada, sino que decía:
─
“Hemos visto el Ángel.”
“A
─
“Pues hoy voy yo a ver qué pasa.”
─ “Listen, leave it alone, because it seems that your sister and the others are not afraid of what I have said because it doesn’t matter to them or they don’t know what it is to go to jail.”
I said this to frighten them, but I had this thought that it
could be something important. When three or four days had passed and I
finished this job, we were on another job, making a bridge, and Mari Loli came
to bring food to her father and the workers who were there; there were about
eight or ten of us. The bridge was about three kilometers away from the
─ “Hey, what have you seen?”
She wasn’t frightened, and she said:
─ “We have seen the Angel.”
“At 8:30 in the evening, in this month of June,” I said:
─ “Well today I am going, to see what happens.”
Muchas
Many people who wanted to come did not dare; they stayed a good distance away, but I wanted to be near the girls. In the moment they entered the ecstasy, there was an enormous difference in the girls. During those moments, they had their glance to the sky and a look of concentration; it was a very supernatural thing for me.
When I arrived at the ‘Calleja,’ (dirt road to the Pines) the girls were already in ecstasy. There were people there, among them the priest, Fr. Valentín. He was very pale and did not speak; he was cut off from everything. There were also people from out of town as well as people from here: a woman named Emilia, another named Serafina, and others. The four girls were there and I was looking one minute and then it became an interior thing; I don’t know how to say it, I thought: “There is something very special here.
Dios.
I saw the second ecstasy the next day, and since the news spread rapidly, hundreds of people quickly came from nearby villages, including many priests.
During these days of the first Apparitions, I concentrated on the priests and this surprised me very much: that I saw them arguing. Some thought it was true, others thought it was nothing, some said it was an Apparition, that it was true, and others said no. They argued among themselves often. They did it publicly; they argued in the streets, outside…they were not reserved about arguing.
For me, because of the faith I have in my religion, I always thought that the priests could not argue because it seemed true, something from the Virgin, something from God.
agujas. A este señor han querido hasta pegarle. Es que en ese momento las
niñas, hablando con la Virgen, decian:
─
─
“¡Ah!, ¿que nos pinchan otra vez?”
Y
en esto dice un señor:
─
“¿Quién pincha? ¿Qué pasa?, ¿cómo las niñas dicen esto?”
Y
cogieron a ese médico haciendo pruebas.
Doctors also came. One day, there were two doctors, and one of them was in front of the girls with a very bright lantern and with instruments, performing tests on their eyesight and faces. While this man did this, there was another doctor behind the girls on his knees. He was poking the girls on the legs with a needle. They almost wanted to hit this man. In this moment, the girls were speaking with the Virgin and said:
─ “What? That someone is poking us? Oh, it doesn’t hurt!
I heard this. The girls continued speaking about things and two minutes later they said:
─ “Oh! They poked us again?”
A man said:
─ “Who is poking them? What is happening? Why are the girls saying this?”
And they took away the doctor who was doing tests.
Yo
tres, cuatro y cinco apariciones.
No
todas tan frescas y sonrientes.
I would say that I have seen more than two hundred ecstasies. Of course, I have not seen all of them; they lasted for many months. Sometimes, they had three, four, or five Apparitions in one day. The same day, the Apparition could come at 8:30 or 9:00 or 10:00, and then another at 3:00, 4:00, or 6:00 in the morning.
There is no one who can say that the girls appeared tired, and later say “Did they sleep during the day?” No, I know they didn’t because during the day, people were always coming to question them, so they couldn’t sleep. Sometimes the Apparitions lasted two or three hours, and there were some of more than four hours. With the position of their heads, looking at the sky, they still did not grow tired, but remained fresh and smiling.
En
ocasiones iban a velocidades enormes.
Me fijaba
On some occasions they would travel at great speed. I don’t know how fast, but it was at an extraordinary speed when you consider that a child of twelve or thirteen years of age could not run as fast as a young man of eighteen, twenty, or twenty-five, who was accustomed to running and walking to go to his job. Besides, it was impossible to follow them at times because of the roads in Garabandal.
I observed this a lot: the stride of the girls was normal, but sometimes they advanced three steps more than any other person. To follow them was sometimes impossible; the movement of their legs was like normal march, but sometimes with such an enormous speed that was an extraordinary thing.
Tendría
yo unos treinta y cinco años y casi nadie me ganaba a correr, no me ganan hoy
No
I was thirty-five years old, and almost no one could beat me in a race; they still don’t beat me today, and I’m not so young now, much less then. When they walked on their knees or backwards, they went less quickly, but a person walking normally could not keep up with them.
But this is also something that I don’t know how to explain. It is necessary to know a little bit the terrain of Garabandal when going up to the Pines, to the Calleja, with all of the stones that there were then. The girls overcame all of the obstacles with great ease. They moved better than they would if they had been watching where they placed their feet, and they were walking backwards. They never tripped, and they were better aware of the road than I was, seeing it normally.
He
gestos de que aquello les molestase ni nada. Es muy dificil comprender esto;
aún viéndolo, es muy dificil.
Muchas
I have seen many difficult nights, when snow was falling, or rain was falling on their faces, and they were looking at the sky with a smile and they continued in their march, in their Apparition without making gestures that it was bothering them. It is very difficult to understand this; even when seeing them, it is difficult.
Many times, I touched them in the confusion or avalanche of people, at one time or another I held one girl or another by the arm. I noted an extraordinary thing, so extraordinary that they didn’t seem to be flesh, or a human person. They seemed to be a block, a rigid thing, something that is very difficult to explain. They seemed natural in other ways like walking, smiling and speaking, but touching them was very different.
There were many men who were twenty, twenty-five, or thirty
years old, men who could lift one hundred kilos; I could lift that, and I could
not only lift a girl, but two. I am sure that in the normal state I could
lift two at once; that would not surprise anyone. But I have seen very
strong men, and I have known some of them, and they have done this test and not
been able to separate the girls from the ground while they are in
ecstasy. They ask: “how can
this be?”
One time, I remember that Jacinta’s father was there and there was a young man of twenty-five years of age there as well. He said:
─ “I have heard that there is no one who can lift the girls. Would they allow me to try?”
Jacinta’s father was at his side and said:
“Look Sir, that one over there is my daughter, and I give
you permission to go and lift her.” I know this man’s father very
well. They are not from here. His father’s name is Vicente and his
son is Vicentín, and they now live in
─
“Oye, ¡no he podido levantarla!
─ “I have not been able to lift
her! If I go to
─ “Look; now the ecstasy has ended. Go and see if now you can lift her.” This young man grabbed the girl in front of her father, and he said:
─ “Jacinta, don’t worry, this young man is going to see how much you weigh.”
The girl remained still and he lifted her as though she was a doll and said:
─ “Now I’m convinced that this is true. But I can’t tell this to anyone because no one will believe me.”
This occurred in my presence. Jacinta’s father was there and he will verify it.
The Miracle of Conchita’s visible Communion
For me, the most important proof of all was the ecstasy of the Miracle of the Host. When the Miracle of the Host was announced, I was walking by Conchita’s side. I listened to Conchita, who said in a very sweet voice:
─“Oh! There is going to be a little miracle… Oh! That I should say it?”
On June 22, 1962, the Angel announced that there would be a Miracle. Many people asked Conchita what the Virgin had said. She told them that she was very happy because she had an important thing to say.
─ “God is going to perform a Miracle; the Virgin told me that I will receive Communion and everyone will see.”
me dijo:
But She didn’t say where or anything. This was in 1962; I don’t remember the date very well, or the time that elapsed between the announcement and the occurrence. I think it was twelve or fifteen days. Conchita was alone in this Apparition.
Then it became known that there was going to be a Miracle
and therefore many people arrived, between five and six thousand people; I
would say even more. I wanted to see the Miracle, and God and the Virgin
granted me this grace, if not it would have been very difficult. Conchita’s Mother said to me:
─
No
─ Could you please accompany my daughter?
─ “This is very difficult! How will I accompany her with this quantity of people? Where am I going to accompany her to, if I don’t know where or how it is going to be?
─ “The matter is that if you don’t want to accompany my daughter, there is the danger that they will kill her, step on her, or trample her down.”
─ “Well then, you can trust me. I will be there from seven in the morning until the time it happens.”
We didn’t know the time or anything. I only went to my house for a half an hour to eat. Right after I finished eating, I returned again. I waited and waited and waited, so I wouldn’t miss the opportunity to know what time the Miracle would happen, and to be able to be next to her.
Muchas
Crucifijo a besar.
Many times, the girls went in ecstasy to give the crucifix to Matilde and she used to say that her house was in such a ruin that she did not wish for people to enter it, only the girls by themselves. She would request this frequently: that a girl would come to give the Crucifix to kiss. Frequently, one of the girls would come alone to the house, give her the crucifix to kiss, and Matilde would be very happy with this courtesy that the Virgin showed her.

Conchita came out of her house in ecstasy, turned around the corner onto the street where Matilde lives, and at the moment, Matilde saw her coming and right there in front of her, God willed for the Miracle of the visible Communion to take place.
18
Yo seguía a
A mi
─
"¡Bueno, a mí me matan!”
July 18, 1962. In
Pepe says:
It was 12:45 in the morning on July 18, 1962 when the girl fell into ecstasy in her own house and left and went out into the street. There was a multitude of people. She began to give the Crucifix to be kissed to one person and then another. I followed Conchita when she was walking. The people were gathering, and everyone wanted to see. They left me without my belt. There were people there who grabbed me to get closer to the girl. It was very difficult for me, but not the girl. For me, it was because I said:
─ “They are going to kill me!”
“Me
“They’re going to kill me” because they came in avalanches of people, in groups of fifty to one hundred. They were trampling each other and I couldn’t do anything else but to grasp Conchita’s right arm. I said:
─ “Well, May God and the Virgin do what they will here; if the people are going to kill us, that they kill us together.”
There were other people among them, her brothers, her cousins, her family members, and many people from the village trying to do the same I was doing; but none of them were walking by her side, all of them were at a distance.
We went from her house to another street, which was wider. In this stretch, was when I found it very difficult to follow the girl, so I took her arm. The girl fell to her knees on the street. When she fell on her knees, I let go of her arm.
Mi
No he visto cómo
My glance was on the girl; she began to speak and opened her mouth with a smile and stuck out her tongue very naturally. She stuck out her tongue very far. I saw that the tongue was completely clean. I was vigilant for anything that could happen, and I fixed my sight on the girl who stuck out a completely clean tongue. I was about fifty centimeters away from her face, looking at her clean tongue.
She had her tongue out for a minute, without anything happening, but then a mysterious thing happened: suddenly, the Host appeared on Conchita’s tongue. I can assure you that the girl’s tongue was clean at the moment she stuck it out. She did not make any movements with her face, her mouth or her tongue. I can say it as well as many other people who were at her side. I am sure of what I have seen. Her tongue was completely out and clean, when suddenly, the Host appeared there. I did not see how it came; it was instantaneous and I do not even dare to say ‘seconds’, because it happened instantly.
normal.
She had the Host on her tongue for about three minutes. That is to say, that it was not just sticking out her tongue and swallowing the Host, but she waited about three minutes. Others say it was two minutes, or two and a half minutes, but it seems to be about three to me, possibly more, but we’ll say about three minutes.
In the first moment it was a natural Host, normal like a Host given by a priest.
What Pepe says clarifies the different versions. Conchita only saw the Host in the hands of the Angel and when she received it, it was normal; then it increased in size and thickness, but this was when it was already on her tongue, and she didn’t see this because she was looking up; the people saw. It can be seen in the photo that the Host was thicker than usual.
From the first moment until the three minutes ended, this Host grew; it was something living, which is very difficult to explain for me, because I saw something alive in the Host, like the sea when the waves glitter with the sunlight and you see it from far away; it glittered when I looked at the Host.
It was something alive, and glittering from within in its totality. There was considerable growth in its circumference and its width; there was something alive that was moving. There was a moment of great veneration for those who witnessed this attentively and with faith: the Real Presence of God alive in the Host.
After these three minutes, the girl swallowed the Host with great satisfaction and a smile. Then she made the sign of the cross and blessed herself with her Crucifix.
When the Virgin arrived after the girl received Communion, she said: “They still do not all believe.”
Conchita got up and followed the Apparition to the door of the Church, running through various streets of the village, and she visited the Calleja, the site of the first Apparitions. This happened over a period of time, possibly an hour.
Then she returned towards the direction of her house and in the same place where she had had the ecstasy, it left her. The girl was satisfied, asking if everyone was content. The people answered yes, that they were content, and that they had seen the Miracle. The girl asked this because she wanted to know whether the people believed in the Miracle and the Apparitions.
Escribe
Conchita wrote in her diary:
This Miracle which God Our Lord performed through the intercession of the Angel St. Michael was seen completely by some, and others only saw the Host on my tongue, and they firmly believed in that moment. Those who had seen believed as well as those who believed without seeing from the reports of those who saw it.
Dice
siguiendo a Conchita.
Once the girl had swallowed the Host, I tried to notice how many people were there who I would know. I had seen various priests, more than three, about four or five; these priests wore cassocks and were known.
I had to go to my house to change my clothes since they were left in bad condition from some people pulling on them to hold on to me so they could follow Conchita.
They have made declarations about this, but they have not asked me officially. If they had, I would have gladly told them everything that I have seen. No one summoned me officially or interrogated me about the Miracle of the Host or the other ecstasies I saw. No one, officially, has bothered to ask me about this, even though I have made many declarations and they have been published.
Las Noches de los Gritos
Creo
The Nights of the Screams:
I believe that it was the eighteenth and nineteenth of June in 1962. In one of the Apparitions they had in the evening, before the one I am going to explain, the girls had said that the Virgin had told them that they should go back to the Calleja, I don’t know to what; all of the people in the village were waiting to see what would happen. We went with them and we arrived at a point where the Virgin had told them no one should pass, not their fathers, mothers, friends, or anyone; that they wanted to be alone where they had had their first Apparitions.
Everyone had respected this and we had stayed about one hundred meters away. There were many people, about one hundred, and we did what the girls said. It was night already, and completely dark. We heard some screams, like a person asking for help, and we were afraid, asking ourselves what could have happened.
a venir.
The screams came from the girls; they screamed and we could not understand what they were saying very well, only that they were afraid. No one dared go closer; they respected what the girls had said, so no one passed.
A little later, I would say ten to fifteen minutes after these screams I am describing, the girls returned to where we were and when they were within ten meters of us, they looked up where they had had the Apparition. One of the girls held her hands in a position as though to avoid something that was coming. This is one of the few times I have seen them do a thing like this, it is very strange, a serious thing.
Esto
ha sido el primer día. Se les hacían preguntas, pero han dicho:
─
─
“Padre rece.”
This was the first day. The people asked questions, but the girls said:
─ “We have to return tomorrow, at the same time.”
The most serious thing happened the next day. That day, María Dolores and Jacinta were not alone, Conchita was with them. Mari Cruz was not there. They had said the same thing the second day, that the Virgin said that no one should pass until the girls said, and they stayed alone; they went to the Calleja. That night was one of fear for all those of us who were there.
That day, a friar was visiting and he attended this Apparition. When the friar heard these screams, he began to pray and there were people there saying to him:
─ “Pray father.”
ciento cincuenta metros aproximadamente.
The girls did not hear this because we were at a distance from them of approximately one hundred and fifty meters.
When the priest was praying, the girls lowered their screams and when the priest and we would stop praying, the girls would begin to scream once again; this lasted twenty minutes to half an hour.
You could say that I was a person who didn’t know fear, but that night, my legs trembled and I said to myself: “why are my legs trembling? Is it that I am afraid?” No one said anything, but I noticed fear in everyone. At the same time, we heard sobs, and screams from the girls in their way of speaking. I remember that at the same time the others were screaming, María Dolores said:
─ “Oh! Wait, wait, take all the small children first! Wait until everyone confesses.”
Of course, when we heard that, we were afraid, but it was a fear that we felt within; we didn’t scream. Everyone was very serious. Everyone looked at the sky, and we wanted to see whatever it was that the girls were seeing. They were making movements with their hands as if they wanted to avoid something that was going to come.
─
Then, following, when the ecstasy ended, we asked them
several questions. The girls
said:
─ “We have seen the Chastisement; we have seen something worse than being burned; it is going to be a horrible thing.”
It is necessary to do penance and to fulfill all of the messages that the girls have already said at various times. I would say that this has not been done because each time the world changes, going from bad to worse. We don’t want to hear what the Virgin has said, and I don’t know where will all this end up.
Once the Apparition ended that night, the following, the entire village went to confession with the Franciscan friar, who was there with Fr. Valentín’s permission; we also received Communion.
Los objetos besados por la Virgen:
Voy
The Objects Kissed by the Virgin:
I am going to explain a very curious case of an old woman in this village, who is a person of faith and a good person. This lady took her Rosary one day and said to one of the girls, Conchita I believe:
─ “Listen, Conchita, since you give rosaries for the Virgin to kiss, can I give you mine?”
─ “Yes, yes, why not! Give it to me, and when I have an Apparition, I will give it to the Virgin to kiss.”
The girl took the Rosary. That night or the next day, in one of the Apparitions, she gave the Rosary to be kissed with many others and after the ecstasy she gave the Rosary to this elderly woman and said:
─ “Take it Lady, the Rosary has been kissed by the Virgin.”
Pero
esta anciana pensó:
─
But this lady thought:
─ “What if this child did not give the Rosary to the Virgin to kiss, I am not satisfied.”
She took the Rosary and brought it to Jacinta. Then, this is the curious thing that I witnessed: Jacinta came, and among all of the other rosaries, medals, chains, and holy cards was this rosary that belonged to the lady. The Virgin began to kiss all of them, one by one. Sometimes the weight of the things that the girls brought for the Virgin to kiss was great. When she arrived at the lady’s Rosary, Jacinta said: “Oh! You will not kiss this one? It is already kissed? Oh, I didn’t know! Conchita has already given it to you.”
The girl said this while in ecstasy. It was a curious case because no one knew if the Rosary was kissed or not except the old woman. This is what I witnessed and what impressed me.
Ahora
─
“Se lo pediré a la Virgen.”
Now I’m going to tell about another instance that was rather important for me. In my presence, there was a man who had brought many rosaries and holy cards and he gave all of them together to María Dolores and said:
─ “Look, we came in a group, and instead of all of us coming to give you things for the Virgin to kiss; I’m bringing you all of them. Ask the Virgin if you can place these things back on their owners.”
The child said:
─ I will ask the Virgin.
Yo
Algunas
personas decían:
─
I was waiting during the Apparition that day, and I saw when she gave all of the objects to be kissed, and once the kissing ended, she began to look for the people the objects belonged to without knowing who they were. Some people were saying:
─ “Let’s see if it’s really my chain. Let’s see if it’s really my rosary.”
But later it was confirmed that it was exactly right, without any confusion. It is very difficult because there were more than one hundred and she didn’t tangle any of them with another even though they were all mixed: chains, rosaries, and rings, in a mess that nobody could untangle. Yet the girls removed each object very easily, without tangling anything, and put it on its owner without looking. This is a marvelous thing, and I have witnessed many other similar things. This was very common; it happened almost daily.
Yo
espero, si no, me vuelvo a mi casa.”
fuerza me empujase. Iba a la casa de la una o de la otra, que estaba la puerta
abierta y preguntaba a las niñas:
─
“Mira, voy a dormir pero quería saber si vas a tener aparición.”
Ellas
decían que tenían unas llamadas interiores, que tenían tres llamadas. Y
I was in the habit of going out every night. During winter it was very hard, very bad weather, and after a day of work I’d say:
─ “I’m going to see if the girls are having an Apparition tonight, and if it is soon, I’ll wait, but if not, I’ll return to my house.” But I didn’t return to my house; it was as though a force pushed me. I went to the house of one and then the other, who was in the open doorway, and I asked the girls:
─ “Look, I’m going to sleep but I want to know if you’re going to have an Apparition.”
The girls would say if they had had three calls. This was a very extraordinary thing. If I asked the girls and they hadn’t had a call, they’d say “no”, as if in pain. On the contrary, when they did have calls, they would answer smiling:
─
y otras personas.
─ “Yes, I’ve already had one call, or I’ve already had two, or three.”
When the four girls said this, they were very happy. Once they had three calls, there was very little time until the ecstasy came. At the third call, the Virgin was already coming.
I visited their houses frequently. There were old people who could not leave to see the ecstasies and there were also sick people; the girls visited these people frequently and gave them the Crucifix to kiss. They went through the streets, to the Pines, and to the Calleja. They also went to the cemetery frequently. The first times they went into the cemetery and visited the graves of several family members and other people. They went at night and they were sometimes accompanied by others. When the girls entered the cemetery only few people would go in, normally they would remain outside. The girls entered without fear, as though they were entering their own home; they did not show the least bit of fear.
Muchas
cierto.
I have accompanied them to the door of the cemetery many times. They go to the door of the cemetery frequently, whether it is raining, snowing, or there is good weather. At the door of the cemetery, the girls would fall on their knees and would pray for the souls of the deceased.
I am completely convinced that this is real in every
sense. For me, the Apparitions are true and so is what Conchita has
announced, the prophecies, and everything the Virgin has said. I think
that all of this is certainly true.
