El Padre Ramón María Andréu Rodamilans, S.J., con residencia en la casa de Ejercicios Cristo Rey, de Valladolid dice que:

Fr. Ramón María Andreu Rodamilans, S.J., in residence at the Christ the King house for Exercises in Valladolid says that:

With special authorization from His Excellency, the Reverend Dr. Doroteo Fernandez, Apostolic Administrator of Santander, and with the goodwill of my Superiors, the Reverend Fr. Conrado Perez, Picón, S.J., Vice Provincial of Western Castilla, and the Reverend Fr. Cipriano Arana, S.J., Rector of the Professional Schools of Christ the King and my school:  I have visited San Sebastián de Garabandal, near Cosío, in the city of Puentenansa, in the province of Santander, with the motive of seeing the happenings that take place there having to do with four girls who claim to see and hear the Virgin.

I was in San Sebastián de Garabandal on different trips on about 13 days.  During these days, I obtained the following information, which I put in a deposition for the Ecclesiastical Authorities to help them with their work, which they would have to carry out with these happenings.

THE GIRLS

The names of the girls are:  María Concepción, 12 years old;  Jacinta, 12 years old;  María Dolores, 12 years old and María Cruz, 11 years old.

They are not sisters or cousins, at least not in the normal meaning of the words.  The psychological age that was apparent during the first month of the visions would be about 8 or 9 years old, as they would correspond with school girls in a city.

The conduct of the girls since the beginning of the happenings was good, according to the judgment of the priest, the schoolmistress, and the girls’ parents.  Their behavior was normal until the trances began, and it continues to be normal outside of their trances.

(Arintereno. La Evol. pág.737).

THE CHOICE OF THE CHILDREN

I cite Fr. Arintero, O.P., “Why does God prefer the small ones?”  Because the small ones, the women, the virgin souls have purer hearts or do generous violence to their passions.  The Holy Spirit can make the light shine in them.  The words of the sixth Beatitude say:  “Blessed are the clean of heart, because they will see God.”  This finds an application in this life.

Men and the great intelectuals cannot have any reason to accuse women of this; instead they do have reason to accuse themselves.  It is not a privilege of the small children and the women to see supernatural things better, but it is a punishment for the men and for the wise, so they humble themselves.  If they don’t do it, still more confusion awaits them, according to what the Savior said to St. Catherine of Siena.

St. Teresa prayed to Our Lord so that, instead of filling her with so many favors, he might disperse them among wise men, priests, religious, and theologians.  He answered:  “These people do not have the time or the inclination to enter into a relationship of trust with me.  They always disdain Me, so I have to direct Myself to simple women if I am to have the consolation of sharing my concerns with men.”  (Arintereno, La Evol. P. 737).

THE VILLAGE

In the history of the Apparitions of Lourdes the following is said:  “The village sincerely believed in the Apparitions and pointed to the certainty that the Lady was the Virgin Mary.  As a result of this, they have cleaned the grotto, filled vases with flowers, and burned candles…”

There is an analogy between the intuition of the village of Lourdes and that of Garabandal.  The neighbors in the village of Garabandal do not affirm or deny anything.  They don’t say anything but what they see.  All of those who are familiar with the sincerity and normality of the girls say that it is true.

The avalanche of the curious and the diffusion of the news has transformed specific facts into fantastic rumors.  Trying to act seriously, one cannot take other facts for a study than those which come from first account witnesses.  They also cannot eliminate data or authentic facts.

The data that I cite in this report is affirmed directly by me, except for the cases in which I explicitly cite the source from whence they proceed.

ISOLATION OF THE VILLAGE

The isolation of San Sebastián de Garabandal gives the village and its inhabitants a sense of tranquility and peace, which has been broken by the sudden influx of pilgrims and curious.

At sunset a woman from the village, María, Jacinta’s mother, goes through the streets according to custom, ringing a bell to invite the neighbors to pray for “the souls in Purgatory.”  They pray the Rosary in the Church everyday.

THE PATIENCE OF THE PARENTS

The patience of the parents of the girls has gone through a great test with these happenings.  They are simple, humble people, and they have suddenly found their daughters experiencing a phenomenon that is constantly exposing them to people who arrive and at the same time it creates a situation that they cannot control.

The public does not always behave properly in their words and actions.  Sometimes they have created disagreeable situations that the parents have endured with patient self denial.

The lack of authority, of order, makes it so that the parents and the local boys have to defend the girls.  They want to understand what it is about and they find themselves alone before something that they cannot understand.  The fact alone that nothing unfortunate has happened in the three months of this situation, with so many races and different people who have come, is interpreted as a sign that there is a hand that veils the girls and cares for them with love.

THE PUBLIC AND THE VISIONS

A relationship between the people that come to Garabandal and the visions has been observed.  It is like this:  The case has been repeated that when the people are more numerous and it is like the celebration of a feast day, with drunkenness and music or profane singing, then the Apparition has not taken place.  The public has been left disappointed.

The first time I observed it was on August 15, the feast of the Assumption, in the evening.  That day, the whole multitude waited in vain.  Some people were behaving like it was a feast day celebration and when they heard of the profane songs and the binges of revelry of some of the people, some simple men and women of the village told me:  “It seems to me that there won’t be anything today because this happened once before, and here we are glad that nothing happens when they come in that disposition.”

The other day, Amalia, Loli’s sister, called me to tell me in secret that Jacinta was seeing the Virgin in Loli’s house.  I entered and found her in a state of trance.  Among other things (which we will mention at the proper time) she said while talking to the Vision:

“Why are you going so soon?  Oh, of course, since it is Our Lady’s feast day… they are singing.”

When the ecstasy ended, I asked her and she responded:  “She said that she was leaving because they are singing and indulging in excesses.”

Upon leaving the house, I asked:  “Is there someone who is singing?”  And she responded to me:  “Yes, there is a group who is having a feast day celebration.”  That day there was no Vision until this group, who had come in a bus, left.

This happened many other times.  Those occasions that I have witnessed until now have been five. In those five days the improper behavior and the irreverence of the public was clearly made manifest.

THE NORMALITY OF THE GIRLS

In ordinary life, away from the trances, the four girls show how normal they are.  This has been the opinion of the doctors that have seen them, even that of those who have been more scrupulous in analyzing the girls.

For a normal observer, for their parents, for the Pastor, and for all who knew them before, the four girls have always been normal.  The girls, after three long months, are perfectly normal:  They play, run, walk to the fields—5 kilometers on the way there and another five on the way back — They continue to act like children.

The fact that one person is sick is not an obstacle for mystical phenomena to be accomplished on her.  Bernadette Soubirou suffered from asthma until her death.  St. Gemma Galgani was very sick.

In the case of Garabandal, the normality of the girls is abundant.  Fr. Royo Marín in the Theology of Christian Perfection n.2 566:  “The history of the souls admitted into the favor of the Divine Grace clearly testifies that God accommodates Himself to the most diverse complexities and that no one of them can represent an insuperable obstacle for God, who with his will alone can make all things out of nothing.”

(Teol. De la Perfección Cristiana, n 465).

NUMBER AND TIME

The number of visions cannot be counted by the day.  Although in the first fifteen days there was not a vision everyday, afterwards there were multiple visions each day.

The times have also been varied:  The first hours of the morning, mid─ morning, after dinner.  The most common time was between seven and nine in the evening.  Afterwards, they were at night.  They finished at five in the morning on some occasions.

Fr. Royo Marín says:

Frequency:

For some saints it has been great.  For St. Magdalena of Paccis, St. Michael of the Saints, and St. Joseph of Cupertino, life was just a continuous series of ecstasies.

LENGTH OF THE VISIONS

It has varied.  Sometimes it has been almost simultaneous, for about two to five minutes.  These brief visions have been few and they have always coincided with some warning or news referring to the visions:  “Today I will not come because they sing a lot,” (this was when there were binges of revelry in the village) and also:  “I will come to see you at this hour.”

Ordinarily, they usually last for more than a half hour or it could be prolonged for two hours.  Sometimes, as I remember in one case, Loli was there from nine at night until five in the morning.  The visions were interrupted when they were very long, like the one we allude to with Loli:  the two pauses that occurred lasted for an hour and a half.

It is interesting to see the enormous variety in the history of mystics regarding the length of these states, from a quick moment to 40 uninterrupted days of ecstasy.

St. Teresa says:  “Although sometimes they lasted a long time, other times they ended quickly, like when the Lord wanted to communicate something that could not be told through any human means.  It was more frequent to have them for a time, for it to leave, and then return.

¡Ay!...

TIME DOES NOT STOP

When the girls are having the vision, they have the impression that time stops.  As a result, it is very usual after an hour or more of being in a vision, for them to say:  “Don’t go, oh!  Why are you going so soon?  You have only been here a little while… oh!  So much time?  I thought that it was only a minute.”  They say this in postures that seem uncomfortable to us, but they don’t notice it.  For example, they have been on their knees on sharp stones, and after the marches that last a long time.  They always have the impression that it was an instant.

When they finish, they are very happy, with the feeling of being rested, and their bodily aspect also indicates this.  After marches and races, they do not give the sensation of being tired, nor are they hot, nor pale, but they seem perfectly fresh and clean.

THE ANGEL

The first person they spoke to was an Angel.  Later, he revealed his identity to be the Archangel St. Michael.  The first days he did not talk, but later he identified himself and then announced that the girls would see the Most Holy Virgin on July 2.

According to Fr. Royo Marín, the Apparitions of the Most Holy Virgin are frequently preceded by an Angel.  In Fátima, it was the Angel of Peace, who writers identify as St. Michael.

MIEDO

FEAR

“The visions that come from God can produce great fear at the beginning, but then the soul is filled with love, humility, mildness, and peace.”  (Fr. Royo Marín, Theology of Christian Perfection n.2 591).

RITMO

RHYTHM

As we have said, they began their visions with the Angel on June 18, 1961.  After this date, their frequency grew.  From June 18 to July2, there are some days on which the girls did not have visions.

The other days, they saw the Angel, but he did not speak.  On July 2, the girls saw the Most Holy Virgin for the first time; She had been previously announced by the Angel and She spoke with the girls for the first time on that date.

On August 5, they began the ecstatic marches in various forms that we will discuss later.  In view of the disturbance of the curious or devoted, people who had come to the village in great numbers, their parents decided to close the doors of their houses and keep the girls inside.

The Virgin told the girls to obey and they would continue seeing her.  This is how it happened sometimes, but then the girls went through the streets when their parents had opened the doors.

THE FALLS

After August 3, the falls they experience while in ecstasy multiplied considerably.  Sometimes it was the four together.  Other times, they were not all together, there were only two or three.  Other times it was one alone.  The postures that they fall into are generally like sculptures and very beautiful.  They have never fallen into immodest or incorrect postures.

“The ecstatic person’s attitude may vary much, but it is always dignified and modest.” (Fr. Royo Marín, Theology of Christian Perfection n. 463).

“St. Catherine of Siena’s hands and feet would contract simultaneously, making it impossible to extract the objects she had in her hands.”

Cristiana n 467).

THE ECSTATIC MARCHES

They began around August 5 and from then on they have adopted the following forms:  Sometimes they have been all together, facing the front with a normal rhythm.  Other times the four girls have begun together and have separated during the march, each going through different streets, then finding each other later and showing their happiness in the moment they do.

While in the trance, they see each other perfectly, but they cannot see the rest of the people that surround them during the Vision.  Frequently, the marches have been going forward at great velocity, in such a manner, that even the fastest persons cannot follow them:

Frequently, the marches have been backwards, in a dance rhythm, with great agility, through many roads full of sharp stones and smooth stones, but they never fall or hit themselves.  Sometimes, such marches have taken place on their knees.

Fr. Royo Marín says:  “There have been saints that during their ecstasies, would talk to the object of their contemplative vision, and in addition they’d begin to walk in an ecstatic march.  Some of the most famous cases art those of St. Catherine of Siena and St. Magdalena of Paccis.”  (Theology of Christian Perfection n. 467).

POSTURAS.

POSTURES

On August 31, one of the girls “walked” several meters toward the Church while in a sitting position and several meters more in way back from the Church.  The people who witnessed this became so emotional that many cried, not because she walked while sitting, but because while she did this, her dress covered her to the knees, without anybody’s help touching or fixing the dress.  Later, it was confirmed that her dress had not been stained.  She repeated this several times.  This same day, Loli entered a trance and the Virgin advised her to lengthen the skirt of her dress a little.  The other three seers said that the Virgin smiled when she said this.

Fr. Arintero said in “Mystical Evolution,” p. 529:  “In natural ecstasies, the convulsive movements that can happen are disordered and immodest and they are exposed to great risks.  In the divine ecstasies, modesty is guarded and there is admirable composure and no danger of any harm or damage, even if a seer falls in the fire.  These girls have never suffered any damage when they have fallen during the trances.

TWO FIELDS

There are two fields that can be distinguished:  The field of the spectator and that of the girls in the state of the vision.  The spectator sees the girls and their manner of behaving in the external phenomena, movements, laughter, words, etc….but they do not see the vision.

The girls see the Vision, the light, they hear, etc… but they don’t see the public, even though they are aware that they are there, often times, because the Vision has revealed it to them.  The girls who are having a vision see each other, but when one leaves the vision and the other doesn’t, those who continue in the vision stop seeing the one who has left the vision.  When the seer returns to the vision, the other girls see her again.  See what happened on July 29:

Jacinta was in ecstasy in the Pines, with many people around her, and I (Fr. Ramón María Andreu) was thinking of a solution to that phenomenon.

This report was made at the beginning of the Apparitions and after being written, the Apparitions continued for several years until they publicly reached their end in 1966.

I was thinking about hypnosis, hysteria, suggestion, impressionability…when suddenly, of the two girls who were in ecstasy, one of them, Loli, returned to normality.  This return to the normal state is instantaneous.  When she returned to the normal state, she looked at me and said:  “She left.”  This dialogue took place:

P. Andréu. “¿Ya no ves a la Virgen?”

─ Loli. “No señor.”

─ P. A. “¿Por qué?”

─ L. “Se fue.”

Fr. Andreu:  “You do not see the Virgin anymore?”

Loli: “No, sir.”

Fr. Andreu:  “Why not?”

L:  “She left.”

Fr. Andreu:  “Look at that one” (Jacinta, who continued in ecstasy).  Loli looked and smiled when she saw her friend.

Fr. Andreu:  “What did the Virgin tell you?”  (When she was going to respond, she had the vision once again).

L:  (In ecstasy)  “Why did you leave?”

L:  (To the Virgin)  “Why did you leave me?”  (Loli and Jacinta at the same time, talking to the vision in ecstasy)  Then it was because of this?

L:  “Then, it is so that he will believe?”

It is clear that the Virgin Mary wanted to give proof that it was She who was there.  All that happened was far from being hysteria, suggestion, hypnosis, etc., …it was an ecstasy.

ANESTESIA

Ella no recordaba ningún golpe y no sentía dolor.

ANESTHESIA

The anesthesia to pain during an ecstasy is complete.  Apart from the tests that have been done on the four seers, like pinching them, burning them with cigarettes, etc, I have seen them kneel very hard without the least gesture of pain.

The most impressive thing for me is this regard was when I saw Loli receive a great blow on the head (while in ecstasy) on the edge of a cement stair.  The noise was enormous.  Those present drowned their scream, but the girl in ecstasy was sitting on the ground smiling while she spoke with the Vision.  (When she left the ecstasy, we asked if she felt pain.  She didn’t remember hitting herself and she didn’t feel pain.  She had a bump on the place she hit).

Nº 467)

“When the ecstasy is total and perfect, the lack of sensibility is absolute.  The most painful cuts, the brusquest shakes, the burns themselves, etc… are useless to make them return from the ecstasy before they stop seeing the Vision.  Frequently (as has happened in Garabandal) the eyes conserve their activity, but it is to have them fixed on the Divine Vision, with a vivacity that seems to make them considerably larger.

They don’t perceive any material thing, as can be proven by shinning abruptly a bright light in front of their eyes or any object.  Nothing produces the least movement in their pupils or eyelids.” (Fr. Royo Marín, Theology of Christian Perfection. n. 467).

REFLEJOS

REFLEXES

Sometimes the girls cry tranquil tears that fall down their cheeks.  These tears correspond to the moments in which they find themselves in ecstasy and they seem to be a consequence of what they see or hear.  Sometimes they say words like:  “Pardon,” or “Mercy,” or “We will not do it again,” or “We will pass that on.”

¿dentro?»

PARTICIPATION OF THE SPECTATOR

The girls, according to their explanations, do not see the people that surround them, but they can feel their touch.  In order to locate the people that have given them objects for the Virgin to kiss, after She kisses them, it happens two ways:  they go in different directions, as the Virgin tells them “in this direction is,” and other times the Most Holy Virgin takes them by the hand and brings them to where the person they are looking for is located.

If there are rosaries or chains, sometimes the girls themselves put them around the person’s neck or in their pocket.  They ask the Vision:  “Where is the pocket?  Oh, I understand… inside?”

On one occasion, one of the girls put medals in the pocket of my cassock after unbuttoning it.  When they place the rosaries and medals over the head after the Virgin had kissed them, they usually say:  “Take my hands and lead them, because I cannot see it.”  Then the movement was much faster and so exact that they put on the rosary or chain without touching or brushing the head.

There have been other ecstasies with collective participation.  The Virgin told one of seers to pray the Rosary in the Church after the Vision ended.

Since the Church was closed, the girl went to the door; it was there that she entered into ecstasy.  The Virgin told her to pray loudly so that the people congregated there could answer.  She prayed a marvelous Rosary in ecstasy like that through the streets of the village, while the whole village accompanied her in prayer.

She didn’t count the Hail Marys — she didn’t carry a Rosary nor did she count with her fingers, but she didn’t ever make a mistake about the number of Hail Marys.  When she finished the ecstasy and the Rosary, the child said to us:  “The Virgin tells us when it was time for the Glory Be.”

ESPECTACULARIDAD

SPECTACULARITY

When the girls are outside of ecstasy in the normal state, they are not anxious to make spectacles.  Just the opposite: they like to run away from the people who come to see them.

One day, coming from the field and arriving at a high place where they could see the village, Loli and Jacinta said;  “What a shame, it was so good to be alone, and now there are people.”

On the other hand, the girls do like it when people come because they want them to believe, but the girls don’t want attention when they come.

The girls obey their parents and the priests in addition to the Vision.  They do not worry if after many people come, there is no vision.  This shows the truth of the events.  If it was the opposite, if the ecstasies would always take place in order to demonstrate what the girls wanted, if it had been a ‘just pretend’ or a child’s game by the girls, as the Bishop’s Commission (which never came to formally exist) said, then it never would have been like this.

With respect to the descriptions of what they see, the four girls always agree.  They also agree on what they hear when the four of them are together.

There are some small variances in how they refer to the days in which specific events took place, and it refers to when they say that they don’t remember exactly when a specific event occurred.  This is normal.

7.c. 4, a 5).

Cristiana n2 608)

With respect to a miracle or proof, the girls said that the Virgin told them one would occur.

“When a locution is given directly through the mind, it is not subject to error.  When it is made through the imagination or the senses, certain illusions can enter it.(Lalbermant, Doctrine. P. 7 c. 4 a. 5.)

“We should not reject a revelation because one of its parts or some detail appears to be false.  It could be that the remaining parts are true.” (Theology of Christian Perfection n. 2 608.)

In the history of Fatima, we read this:  “This type of question bothered the children.”  They were still so shaken by what they had seen that it was not easy to go back to thinking about daily matters.  They answered some questions briefly, and others they didn’t answer at all.  In general they said:  “It is a secret.  I cannot speak of it.”  (Thomas Wash).

Like the seers of Fatima, the seers of Garabandal speak and react in the same way.

In addition to what was said, I have observed the self confidence of the children, their peace and happiness, like their obedience, even when they are opposing the Vision, if their parents said the opposite thing. The most important thing, according to what the Virgin told them, was obedience.

The seers of Garabandal are girls from a remote village where it seems that civilization has still not arrived. There is no telephone, there is no highway, only a road for goats.  The electric light that has arrived is poor and cannot match the light of a candle.  Some of the girls have never seen a rail train and they speak in the most imperfect Castilian Spanish that exists.

How is it possible that when they are in ecstasy or they say something related to the Apparition, or for example, in an ecstasy they can speak in Greek, Latin, German, and they do it perfectly, based on what I have just explained?  The only idea that fits is that they are illuminated by something supernatural.  If not, it is not possible to explain what happens.

THE LIGHT

The light accompanies all of the visions.  It is like the light of the sun, but it is a different light.  They see the light at night as well.  This light impedes them from seeing other things except the people in the vision and the other girls who are also participating in the Vision.  When a girl stops seeing the Vision and returns to the normal state, those who continue in the Vision stop seeing her.

THE OTHER ANGELS

On at least one occasion, the girls saw the Virgin surrounded by small angels, five in total.  On this occasion the Virgin told them that She was the Queen of the Angels, and that is why they accompanied her.

Let’s remember that there is a similar situation in a vision of St. Teresa’s, in which she also saw small Angels.

LA VOZ

A veces sólo tienen locución.

THE VOICE

Sometimes they only have a locution.  They don’t see the person, but they hear them.  In these cases, they also see the light like the sun, which seems to be what fixates them and abstracts them from reality.  The Virgin told them that they would hear a voice and they should follow it.

The voice that they hear most frequently is that of Fr. Luís Andreu.  They don’t see him, but they hear him and feel his hand when he helps them up or touches them to indicate where a certain person is.  The light is like the sun but it is diffused and the rays go down.  The voice comes from the rays.  The ecstatic marches happen because they see the light and the voice or the Virgin and the girls follow them.  They don’t know how to define if they are running, walking, lying down, or even whether they are moving or not.  It is a very different feeling.

When they speak about the calls they say:  “It is as if the Virgin tells us:  run, run, and they feel this within; without the need for words.”

So when they want to describe the Virgin’s voice, they expressed it on one occasion:  “There is no voice like Hers.”

The sensation that they have during the ecstatic marches is not tired or sleepy, but they remember what they say.  At the end of one of these explanations, sometimes they add a “Yes, like this, or I don’t know.”  Sometimes they do no clarify any more explanations and it must be because what they see or hear in their minds is so great that some time must pass before it is clarified (like in Fátima).  The impression is that in these cases they are not certain how to describe something real that they feel, but the four girls always agree on this.

“One cannot say more about what he feels when the Lord lets him understand secrets and his greatness.  The delight of this is in how many could understand, that with reason, it makes us rejects  the earthly delights of this world, which ultimately are but trash when added together…” (Life 27, 12)

“The mystics are not certain how to express with clarity what happens to them.  “There is no language to do justice to these things,” said St. Teresa.  That same saint, when beginning to describe the infused contemplation of the Four Mansions, writes textually:  “They begin to be supernatural and it is very difficult to understand, if your Majesty does not make it clear.”

“It is only through the use of metaphors, examples, comparisons, which do not content them and go around the point to say something about what happens to them, which can never be experienced.  The reason is always the same.  The supernatural action of their talents transcends the discursive mode of the human race.  The intuitive is perceived, but it cannot be properly expressed through discussions and human reasoning.”  (Theology of Christian Perfection n. 2 426)

In regards to the girls’ phrase in their attempt to explain how they speak in their marches and ecstasies.  They say to me:  “We go as though we are in the air, like we are lying down, I don’t know.  As if in another world.  It was like daytime with the sun.”

While reading St. Teresa’s work after this, I found this sentence that has amazing parallelism with the girls:  “It does appear that all those have been in another region, different from that in which we live, where they are shown another light which is so different from the one here…” (Wounds VI cap. V)

When finishing the vision they generally bless themselves or give a kiss.  But the impression, as they explain, is this:  “The Virgin leaves as though she dissolves.”

The way in which the Virgin used to depart in Fátima:  “They realized that six times in 1917 they had seen a Lady made of light, who stood on a small tree and talked to them, then disappeared.”

With the similarity of what occurred in Lourdes and Fatima, the girls of Garabandal speak during their visions of daily incidents, especially of the themes that matter to them most; they often speak about the priests and religious who come.

In the case of Bernadette Soubirous, this part of her dialogue with the Virgin provoked laughs and jokes in those who listened.  It appears to signify some kind of manifestation of her soul and her conscience, with such elemental and simple language, as that which one would use in a normal conversation.

MILAGRO

MIRACLE

Since Fr. Valentín (the pastor) told the girls to ask the Virgin for a miracle so that everyone would have proof and believe.  The girls had been heard asking this of the Most Holy Virgin several times.  When the girls told the Virgin that many did not believe, the Virgin smiled and answered “they will.”  The Virgin has repeated this many times.

They say that the Virgin tells them that there will be a miracle, but they do not know anything more.

REZAR

PRAYER

Visions in which the girls do not pray the Rosary or the Station to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament are rare.  The girls never count the Hail Marys and they never make mistakes.  The girls say that the Virgin tells them when to say the “Glory Be.”

The Virgin seems to pray the corresponding part with the girls, sometimes the part beginning ‘Hail Mary’ and sometimes the part beginning ‘Holy Mary.’  The formula that they normally employ is the one my brother Fr. Luís María and I taught them:  “Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you, blessed are you among women…”  They pray the Station to the Blessed Sacrament with “Long live Jesus in the Sacrament.”

This theme of prayer with the Virgin is similar to Lourdes and Fátima, at the same time it puts in relief the devotion to the Rosary and the Blessed Sacrament.

NO TE VAIGAS

DON’T GO

It happens very frequently that when they are in a trance, we hear the girls say this sentence, “Don’t go, ok?”  This is how they express their desire to continue on in a state of trance even though sometimes we have heard them say also:  “Well, you can go when you want.”  (They say this while speaking with Fr. Luís María Andreu, who, according to them, is in Heaven).

Other times, in a state of trance, they return to reality for a few minutes and then enter the Vision again after a fraction of a second.

The words of St. Teresa are interesting in how they express this “don’t go” and the brisk entrance and exit from ecstasy.  “One does not dare troubling or agitating herself nor would dare to speak back.  The poor soul does not understand, that there is nothing she could do of her own doing to bring about that good, nor can she prevent it from leaving unless it is God’s will.”  (Life, 15 - 1)

It is interesting to read all of the numbers (42, or 421) of the Theology of Christian Perfection by Fr. Royo Marín, O.P.; from there we only cite a few sentences:  “No one can achieve contemplation when it pleases them.”

This has been observed many times in reality, always with the girls of Garabandal, who have to be waiting without being able to bring about events in spite of the great desires to do so.  “Sometimes one receives it suddenly (without any previous preparation) and other times, the soul is prepared for what it receives.”

I have seen the girls when they receive the third call.  They enter into ecstasy, leave, return to it, etc… without any previous warning.  Or they might enter in the trance, grasping objects in their hands: a lantern, a glass, a dress, or the hand of another girl; interrupting a sentence in the middle without finishing. etc.

«No sé, o no sabemos».

Other times they have been waiting, recollected and isolated from everyone, and yet they have waited in vain.  It becomes evident that it is not up to the girls to enter or to leave the state of trance.

“Nothing is more propitious and favorable for inspiring sentiments of humility.  The soul sees clearly that it plays a very secondary role.”

It is very frequent to hear responses full of humility, when you question them referring to this:  “I don’t know when.”  “Where ever She says.”  When they are asked:  “Are you always going to see the Virgin?”  They say:  “We don’t know; I don’t know.”  “Are you going to see Her tomorrow?”  “I don’t know, we don’t know.”

Whenever they affirm that they are going to see her, it is because She has said so, or they have had a call, or because when she said goodbye she said ‘until tomorrow.’

At the beginning the girls (would take off running) escaped from the public who had gone up to see them.   They said that the Virgin told them not to flee, but that if they asked the girls something, they could respond with the things they knew they could say.  From then on, they didn’t flee.

Another piece of advice was “we should be modest.”  The girls interpreted this to mean that they should not be vain, but dress with simplicity and be humble.  The girls said that the Virgin repeated often to them that they should be obedient.

They have been given the advice to make sacrifices.  They didn’t know the meaning of the word.  They asked the priests, and I had to give them an explanation.

Sin fills them with horror.  We heard Conchita say in ecstasy:  “Those are sins, take me from it, I don’t want to see it.”  She told the Virgin this and cried.

María Loli was in another ecstasy for a long time, about twenty─ five minutes, and we saw tears run down her face, and she exclaimed at the same time:  “Mercy, mercy.”  Afterwards, they commented that the Virgin had told them that sin offends the Lord the most.

(I ─ Il, 111, I).

THE SPIRITUAL PROGRESS OF THE GIRLS

It is not easy to measure the spiritual progress of a soul, unless it is by a spiritual director with whom one has constant contact.  The spiritual progress of the girls had to be measured internally more than externally.  This is noted in the way they exercise the virtues.

St. Thomas says:  “The grace is double; one through which the man himself is unified with God and it is called grace gratum faciens; the other is by which the man cooperates so that another one returns to God, and this grace is called gratis data, because it is about the power of nature, and it is granted to man without regard to the own merits of the person, but so that he may cooperate with the justification of the other.  This is why it is called gratum faciens.”  The Apostle says about this (1 Cor. 12─ 27):  “In each person, there is the manifestation of the Spirit for common welfare, this is to mean, for the welfare of others.” (I ─ II, III, I).

3 ch. n" 7)

“For the instrumental cause — man — that God makes use of to produce these miraculous deeds  does not need to be supernaturally united with Him through love, much less to be a saint.”

“These gratis datas graces do not sanctify the person who receives them, who may receive them in mortal sin, and remain in it after he receives them (Theology of Christian Perfection ng 552).

Suárez says it is just the opposite, “the gratis datas graces, although given for the benefit of the others, nevertheless, can and should be used for the spiritual benefit of the person who receives them” (De gratia, prologue ch. 3 n. 7).

In the first contemplative prayers, the transformation is not so profound that all types of defects, including those voluntary ones, disappear from the soul.  Here is where a spiritual director would made a great mistake to judge as illusory the contemplation of a soul that is still attached to certain defects that many times come from the temperament and character rather than from the will.  The contemplation efficaciously helps the holiness of the soul, but it does not instantaneously or necessary produce a Saint (Theology of Christian Perfection d. 431).

PERDONAR

FORGIVENESS

This refers especially to a priest who forced the girls to tell the secret, making them put a line for each letter in writing on a piece of paper next to the Main Altar.  Many times during a trance, they said that they forgave him.  They also said this in the normal state, adding that the Virgin told them they should forgive him.  The same happened with doctors and other people who pinched them, burned them with cigarettes, or made other painful tests, or tried to take them from Garabandal.

HUMILDAD

HUMILITY

From the beginning of the happenings at Garabandal, the girls maintained their humility.  They show it in the way they dress, speak, and in the little attention that that they pay to the public that comes to see them, in the humble chores that they did and continue to do in front of everyone, and in their meekness in front of priests, even if they are unknown to the girls.

Conchita was the only one who was wearing earrings during a trance and in front of the Church she asked the Virgin:  “What do I have that is wrong?  Oh, well!”  Returning to reality, she ran to her house and took off the earrings and a bracelet.  She ran back and as soon as she entered the Church, she entered the trance again.

LIFE OF PIETY

From the beginning of the happenings, the girls received Communion everyday.  They attend all of the Masses that are celebrated and pray several Rosaries each day.

On August 8, María Cruz told the Virgin during a vision:  “Now I know how to pray better, but before I knew how to play better.”  When the girls asked the Virgin what she wanted from the Spanish people, she responded to them:  “That they confess and receive Communion.”

SACRIFICIOS

SACRIFICES

From the time they learned the meaning of the word “sacrifice,” they have been practicing it.  For example, they divide what they have among others.  If someone gives them gifts, they give them away; they don’t wear bracelets or trinkets, etc.

CLEANLINESS OF SOUL

The girls did not have well formed consciences yet, and that is why they cannot differentiate between what was a mortal sin, a venial sin, or nothing, but they want to know.  They ask the Virgin if certain things are sins.

The horror for sin that the girls have makes them want to do reparations for the sins of men, but they do not have the correct sense of the sins of men, they only know that they are something that sadden God and the Virgin.

Their manner of being, reacting, etc… is childish.  Although the girls are 12 years old, their psychology corresponds to that of a city child between 8 or 9 years of age.

Garabandal does not have a highway, so trains and automobiles do not pass through except for the multitudes that now come to see the Apparitions; before no one came.

In one of the dialogues I witnessed, maybe the most dramatic thing I have heard, while speaking with the Virgin, one of the girls saw something that made her say with anguish:  “What is this tape?  Oh, the tape of the sinners…no, I don’t want to see… take it away from me… it frightens me, so many sinners…”  Abundant tears ran down the face of one of the seers and we heard her say:  “Mercy, mercy.”

MODESTIA

MODESTY

The modesty of the seers is evident in their manner of dressing, walking, speaking, looking, etc., it fulfills the advice that the Virgin repeated various times.  They don’t like the women who wear low cut blouses; as a matter of fact, one of the girls refused to have her picture taken with a woman who was wearing a very low─ cut blouse.

PACIENCIA

PATIENCE

The patience of the girls is very great.  They prefer not be with the multitude, but since the Virgin told them that they should respond whenever they could, they have done it sweetly.

When the people see them, they touch them, they kiss them and have even cut off one of the girl’s braids, but the girls have never gotten angry.  When they are spoken to and they are tired on the days when there is a crowd, they limit themselves to remain quiet and to smile.

THE PRIESTS

From the beginning, the seers have shown a special preference for the priests and religious.  They would count the ones who would arrive because they noticed their habits and they would tell it the Virgin.  The Virgin advises them to be obedient to their parents and the priests even if they don’t know them.

THE DEVIL

On August 29 at 12:30am, the trance began.  Loli had a flask of holy water and she threw it because she had been told that the Apparitions could be from the devil.  She said after the trance that when she did this:  “The Virgin smiled.”

While reading the history of Lourdes, I find this sentence:  “Bernadette got up and began to throw holy water at the Vision.  The Lady smiled.”  (Rendition, August, September, p. 354, paragraph 49.)

CONVERSIONES

CONVERSIONS

The people who have come to Garabandal have experienced different reactions.  Among the spiritual effects, there exist several life changes.  I know of two conversions to Catholicism.  These conversions happened to Protestants.  One of them is an older person.  Both converts are now in a period of instruction and preparation for the next definitive step.

After the thirty years that this report was written, these people give thanks to God today for being given the grace to convert in Garabandal.

CONCHITA IN SANTANDER

One of the things that we read in the history of Lourdes is this:  “The Commission reported many vague things, and they wanted to remove Bernadette from that place.  The report said that for her good she should be taken to a mental institution.  The intervention of the pastor from Peyramale kept Bernadette out of the insane asylum.  ‘I know well my obligations as a pastor—he said firmly to the authorities—you have not shown that this girl is crazy, so I will not consent to have her locked up…’”  When the village of Lourdes learned that they wanted to take Bernadette away, they almost began a riot.

When the oldest of the four seers, Conchita, was taken to Santander to the Bishopric, accompanied by her mother, she had an ecstasy from the Virgin, and a locution on another day.

She didn’t have any other visions in Santander, and they didn’t begin again until she arrived in Garabandal again.  Among other things that the child did in Santander, she was taken to the beach on several days.  The girl said that they showed her photographs, and did other things with her, no doubt as a test (ordered by the Bishop, who was the one who sent for her).  The end motivation was to remove the girl from the environment in which she was living, which they thought was influencing her visions. (Then, why did she have a vision and a locution in Santander?)

When she returned to Garabandal, I didn’t question her about the period of time she lived in Garabandal.  She, in front of other people, told me ‘the Virgin said that she did not come to me in Santander because I went to the beach, but now I have already confessed myself.’”

There were other incidents during her stay in Santander, and there are several versions that have come to me. I prefer to be silent here even if given the case that the child, before certain questions or documents from determined people (whom I prefer not to name) would have not told the truth because she was afraid of being punished or imprisoned.

The fact that Fr. Valentín (the pastor) contributes is that the Virgin told the girls in Garabandal during a vision that Conchita was also seeing Her (in Santander).

The girls asked the Virgin many questions, and they said that when she didn’t want to respond, she smiled.

While reading the histories of Lourdes and Fátima, we find the same case.  The seers of these places say that when they question the Virgin and She doesn’t want to respond, she smiles.

RECORDER

There is an event that happened in the first days of August, which refers to a recorder.  A man brought a battery─ powered tape recorder to capture what the girls said during their trance in the Pines.  I have the reference to this happening from Mr. José Salceda from Aguilar de Campóo, witness of what I tell here.

When the ecstasy ended, they played the recording so the girls could hear.  When the section corresponding to the ecstasy finished, they turned to some of the girls’ words, in normal conversation, and they told them to ask the Virgin to speak for the recorder.

While they were in this conversation, the girls suddenly entered into ecstasy.  In this state, they asked the Virgin to speak for the microphone so that her voice would be recorded.

When the vision ended, and they returned to their houses with their parents, the remaining people played the recording to see what had been recorded during the trance.  When they arrived at the girls’ sentence in which they asked the Virgin to speak, “an unmistakable very sweet voice was heard, (these are the textual words from Fr. José) which said:  “No, I do not speak.”

The emotion was tremendous and many who were present were crying and advising that it should be taken to the Pope.  They try to play it again in the midst of all that emotion and when they arrived at the specific phrases, they did not hear a thing.

Cito a Redención (agosto ─ septiembre, pág. 354) «...

Very disconcerted, they went down to Conchita’s house.  She had not participated in the mentioned vision, and they wanted her to hear the voice that had spoken during her friends’ ecstasy.  When the cited words were reached, they heard the voice that said, “No, I do not speak,” once again.  When she heard this, Conchita smiled and said very happily that it was the Virgin who spoke.  They played it once again, but we don’t know that they ever heard it again.

After finishing the Vision the girls said that the Virgin had smiled when they requested that She spoke on the microphone.  A similar scene to this one, taking into account the distance between time and means, is something that occurred at Lourdes.  I cite the Rendition (August─ September, p. 354).  “…They continued praying the Rosary.  When it ended, the woman (a daughter of Mary) gave the girl ink, paper, and a pen, and said:  “Ask this Lady what she wants and ask her to write it here.”

Bernadette obeyed.  She got up and went toward the grotto.  A few minutes later, she returned to the two women:  “The Lady smiled when I told her.”

FR. ROYO MARÍN

Fr. Royo Marín was in Garabandal on August 8th.  Although he went up as a skeptic, what he saw that day changed his mind and he said many times:  “Although I am not infallible, I am a specialist in this area, and I took four notes that cannot be wrong and make me say that this is supernatural.”

Given the prestige and wisdom of Fr. Royo Marín in this matter, and his publications about this, especially the “Theology of Christian Perfection,” it is convenient to have his opinion, taking into account the serious study about the happenings at Garabandal.  He has given his opinion many times.

There is still a series of events in San Sebastián de Garabandal that I will leave for a subsequent report.  At the end of this report, I want to make clear that I only want to contribute all of the serious facts that were witnessed and heard with the desire to help those who will have to make a report one day about what took place.
