The Apparitions of the Virgin Mary in San Sebastian de Garabandal

020 Testimony of Luís, Miguel, and Juan, Brothers of St. John of God, and Witnesses of Conchita’s Communion at the Hands of the Angel.

Los Pinos, donde tuvo lugar la Comunión de Conchita descrita en este relato.

These are the Pines, where Conchita’s Communion which is described here took place.

La ruta que emprendieron los tres hermanos de San Juan de Dios es la de la antigua carretera del Cantábrico, realizada en tren, que va por Celorio-Llanes-Unquera-Pegues. Aquí había un autobús que subía a la montaña alta pasando por Puentenansa y Cosío. Años más tarde este autobús sale hacia Cosío desde Cabezón de la Sal.

The route that the three brothers of St. John of God took is the old road from Cantábrico.  By train, one would go by the Celorio-Llanes-Unquera-Pesués route.  There was a bus here that used to go up the tall mountain, passing through Puentenansa and Cosío.  Years later, this bus departs for Cosío from Cabezón de la Sal.

“Aunque estábamos en vísperas de Ejercicios en Celorio (Asturias), nos pusimos de acuerdo tres compañeros y un servidor y por la mañana muy pronto, casi sin saber donde íbamos, nos levantamos a primera hora de la mañana, a las cinco aproximadamente. Pero uno de los compañeros, cuando fuimos a llamarlo nos contestó: me he rajado. Este compañero no fue.

“Although we were in vespers of the Exercises in Celorio (Asturias), three companions and I woke up early in the morning, at five approximately, and decided to leave almost without knowing where we were going.  But one of the companions, when we went to call him, answered us:  “I am backing down.”  That companion did not go.

Salimos por la mañana, alrededor de las siete y diez, en el tren que nos llevaba hasta Unquera. En el trayecto preguntamos al interventor que ¿cómo se iba a Garabandal? ya que, como indicaba al principio, nos metimos en el tren, yo llamo el tren de la Divina Providencia, sin saber adónde íbamos.

We left in the morning, around 7:10, on a train that took us to Unquera.  While we were on the train, we asked an inspector how to get to Garabandal, because, as I have indicated before, we got on a train, which I call “the train of Divine Providence,” without knowing where we were going.

Este buen señor nos indicó todas las combinaciones posibles pero en principio nos dijo que era poco menos que imposible el subir a ese pueblo que el decía de las Apariciones. Llegamos a Llanes y el señor a quien preguntamos, muy amable, nos dijo que debíamos llegar a Pesués y allí salía un autobús en dirección a Cosío.

This good man told us of all the possible combinations, but he told us from the beginning that it was almost impossible to get up to what he called “the village of the Apparitions”.  We arrived at Llanes and the man we’d asked was very kind and told us that we should go to Pesués, and then take a bus towards Cosío.

Pensando se hacía muy largo la hora de esperar nos pusimos en dirección al pueblo siguiente. A los doscientos metros aproximadamente cuando íbamos andando, casi un poco sonámbulos, nos encontramos con unos picapedreros a quienes preguntamos cómo se podría subir a Garabandal y nos indicaron que seguramente pasaría por allí un camión, alguna cosa que nos llevara.

Thinking that it would be a long time to wait, we began walking in the direction of the next village.   After approximately two hundred meters of walking a little like sleepwalkers, we met some stone-cutters whom we asked how to get to Garabandal.  They told us that a truck would likely pass by and take us there.

Entre dudas y no dudas nosotros seguíamos camino adelante cuando apareció un taxi. Este taxi iba vacío, solamente iba el chofer, y solamente cabíamos tres compañeros. Quiere decir que si hubiera venido el compañero que se rajó no hubiéramos subido ninguno.

With doubts and without them, we continued on the road when all of the sudden a taxi appeared.  This taxi was empty, with only the driver inside, and there was only room for three passengers.  This meant that if our other friend back down had come, none of us could have gotten on.

Los picapedreros indicaron al taxista que queríamos subir a Garabandal. El taxista muy amable accedió gustoso. En el trayecto empezamos a preguntarle qué era aquello de las Apariciones, cómo era el pueblo y qué opinaba de todo lo que se hablaba de la Virgen y de las niñas.

The stone-cutters told the taxi driver that we wanted to go up to Garabandal.  The taxi driver was very kind and agreed to take us.  In route, we began to ask about the Apparitions, what the village was like, and about his opinion of what was being said about the girls and the Virgin.

Llegamos a Cosío y ya allí, para subir a San Sebastián de Garabandal, había que recorrer unos seis kilómetros. Combinaciones para subir fatales, malísimas. Nos dijeron que había dos procedimientos: o subir a pié o llegarnos en un taxi exclusivamente para esos menesteres cuyo taxista recuerdo se llamaba Fidelín.

We arrived at Cosío, and from there we had to travel six kilometers to San Sebastián de Garabandal.  The conditions for going up were very bad.  They told us that there were two options: to go up on foot or to arrive in the taxi reserved specifically for that.  I still remember that the taxi driver’s name was Fidelín.

Entonces nos encontramos con un montón de gente que estaba allí en el pueblo esperando a subir a Garabandal y otros que habían bajado. Recuerdo que nos encontramos con un médico catalán y le preguntamos, qué opinaba él, como psiquiatra, de aquello que decían era extraordinario. Él nos contestó:

Then we encountered a great amount of people there in the village, some who were waiting to go up to Garabandal and others who had come down.  I remember that we found a Catalan doctor and we asked him what his psychiatric opinion of the extraordinary happenings was.  He answered us:

Para mí yo creo que todo es sobrenatural, pero ustedes suban, vean y juzguen. Para mi las videntes creo que son niñas totalmente normales.

I believe that all of this is supernatural, but you should go up and see it, and judge for yourselves.  I believe that the seers are completely normal girls.

Nos pusimos de acuerdo con Fidelín, que en aquel momento llegaba. Nos subió en el taxi, se entusiasmó con nuestra idea, nos dió todas las facilidades posibles, nos contó lo que él había visto, nos dijo que para él era sobrenatural. Total que nosotros, cada vez más intrigados, nos íbamos emocionando con aquello de la Virgen. No obstante seguíamos un poco a la expectativa y seguíamos un poco en plan de meros curiosos, nada mas, con buena fe pero sin muchas creencias sobre aquello que tanto se discutía.

We agreed to go up with Fidelín, who arrived at that moment.  We went up in the taxi, enthusiastic about our idea.  He was very relaxed; he told us what he had seen, and said that for him it was supernatural.  We were more and more intrigued and we were very excited about this thing of the Virgin.  Nevertheless we continued with our expectations to be in a role of merely curious bystanders, nothing more, with good faith but without many beliefs about what had been discussed.

Llegó el taxi al pueblo alrededor de la diez y cuarto y paró cerca de la casa de Mari Cruz. Esta niña se encontraba en una solana con su hermana mayor, cosiendo. La indicamos que queríamos hablar con ella y al momento su hermana hizo un gesto como diciendo accede y vete a hablar con estos curas a ver qué es lo que quieren.

The taxi arrived in the village around 10:15 and it stopped near Mari Cruz’s house.  This girl was out in the sunbathed porch sewing with her older sister.  We indicated that we would like to speak with her, and her sister made a motion like saying, “go and talk to these priests and see what they want.”

Muy tímida, nos saludó. Inmediatamente comenzamos a abordarla a preguntas. Algunas eran respondidas pero otras mas íntimas relacionadas con sus Apariciones solo contestaba con una simple sonrisa.

She greeted us very timidly.  Immediately, we began to approach her and question her.  Some questions were greeted with responses and others, the more private questions relating to her Apparitions, she only answered with a simple smile.

Después de estar unos diez minutos aproximadamente con ella, vimos que subía por una calle Jacinta, otra de las videntes nos dijo Fidel. Nos saludó también con una sonrisa muy angelical. Comenzamos de nuevo a abordarla a preguntas pero las respuestas y manifestaciones eran similares a las de Mari Cruz.

After staying with her for approximately ten minutes, we noticed that Jacinta, another one of the seers that Fidel had told us about, was coming up the street.  She also greeted us with an angelic smile.  We began to approach and question her, but once again her responses and behavior were similar to those of Mari Cruz.

Entonces aprovechamos para hacernos algunas fotos con ella y en esto se presentaron ante nosotros unos señores andaluces, el pueblo estaba plagado de gente. Todo eran comentarios de lo que habían visto, de lo que esperaban, etc. La gente, nos pudimos cerciorar de que las tenia verdadera simpatía. Quizás sería por lo que estas niñas habían dado de extraordinario a estos hombres, con sus Apariciones y sus diálogos con la Virgen. Muchos llevaban allí varios días, estaban sin comer, otros muertos de sueño.

Then we tried to take some pictures with her, and some people from Andalucía presented themselves before us, in this village that was full of people.  They made comments about what they had seen, what they hoped, etc.  The people, as we ascertained, were ones that had true sympathy.  Maybe it was because these girls had shown such extraordinary things to these people with their Apparitions and their dialogues with the Virgin.  Many had been there several days without eating, others were exhausted.

A nosotros nos parecía aquello un poco extraño pero a la vez de picarnos la curiosidad nos daba cada vez mas pena porque teníamos que marcharnos.

It all seemed a little strange to us, but it also piqued our curiosity and made us sad that we had to leave.

Los Ejercicios a que aluden frecuentemente se refieren a los «Ejercicios Espirituales, unos días de Oración y Meditación profunda, siguiendo el modo de San Ignacio de Loyola».

The Exercises that I am referring to are frequently alluded to as the “Spiritual Exercises, which are some days of profound Prayer and Meditation, following the style of St. Ignatius of Loyola.”

Nos dijeron, ustedes quédense que esta noche va haber una Aparición y verán ustedes cómo esto es de Dios, decian algunos. Otros muy dudosos sonreían con cierto sarcasmo. El taxista, al ver nuestra perplejidad, puesto que aquella misma noche teníamos que estar en Celorio (Asturias) para comenzar los Ejercicios, se prestó a bajarnos por la noche con una linterna, desde Garabandal hasta el pueblo inmediato, puesto que el taxi no respondía de noche por aquellos andurriales.

They told us, stay tonight because there is going to be an Apparition and you will see that this is God, some said.  Others were very doubtful and smiled with certain sarcasm.  The taxi driver saw that we were perplexed because we had to be back in Celorio (Asturias) that night to begin the Exercises, so he offered to bring us down at night with a lantern from Garabandal to the next village, since the taxi did not go through by-roads at night.

Nosotros accedimos, entre dudas y muchos interrogantes, puesto que pensábamos que la noche de Ejercicios se nos llegaba encima y nosotros nos quedábamos en Garabandal. Nos liamos la manta a la cabeza y dijimos ¡sea lo que Dios quiera! y vamos a ver lo que pasa.

We agreed despite doubts and many questions, since we thought that we were already in a night of Exercises, so we stayed in Garabandal.  We bundled blankets under our heads and said: “May God’s will be done!  We are going to see what happens”

En esto nos fuimos a tomar un bocadillo. Llevábamos cuatro bocadillos que uno era del compañero que no nos acompañó. Subimos donde Fidelín nos dijo que eran las Apariciones, nos sentamos en aquellos pinos y estábamos comentando que donde estaba Conchita, que qué pena no ver a Conchita porque según noticias estaba segando hierba.

We went to eat our sandwiches.  We had brought four sandwiches, one for the companion who didn’t come.  We went to where Fidelín had told us the Apparitions took place and sat down in those Pines.  We commented that we didn’t know where Conchita was, and it was too bad we wouldn’t see Conchita because she was cutting hay.

Cual no sería nuestra sorpresa que empezando a tomar el bocadillo vimos una niña como de unos doce años acompañada de otras niñas de dos, tres años aproximadamente. Esta niña llevaba en sus manos un velo. Nosotros, sin conocerla, preguntamos que si había visto a Conchita. La contestación no se hizo esperar: “Soy yo.”

Thus, we were very surprised that as soon as we began to eat our sandwiches, we saw a girl of about twelve years old accompanying two other girls, who were approximately three years old.  This girl was carrying a head veil in her hands.  Without knowing her, we asked if she had seen Conchita.  The response did not delay much:  “I am Conchita.”

Nosotros entonces, al vernos en aquellos pinos acompañados de aquella niña, dijimos: “vamos a abordarla y esta niña nos va a responder.”

When we saw ourselves at the Pines accompanied by that girl, we said: “Let’s approach her and this girl is going to respond to us.”

Efectivamente, estuvimos charlando con ella mucho tiempo. La invitamos a tomar un bocadillo puesto que teníamos un bocadillo que nos sobraba. La dijimos: mira este bocadillo es para tí. Nos contestó: “No, porque tengo que Comulgar.”

We chatted with her for a long time.  We invited her to eat a sandwich since we had an extra one.  We said to her:  “look, this sandwich is for you.”  She answered:  “No, because I have to receive Communion.”

Eran las diez y media en punto. Nosotros, por aquello que tenía que Comulgar, miramos el reloj para calcular si efectivamente esta niña podía Comulgar si comiera aquel bocadillo o no. Nos dijo:

It was ten thirty on the dot.  When she said she had to receive Communion, we looked at the clock to see if this girl could receive Communion if she ate the sandwich.  She told us:

No puedo comer porque dentro de dos horas voy a Comulgar aquí.

“I can’t eat because within two hours I’m going to receive Communion here.”

Nosotros, intrigados de aquellas cosas que nos decía la niña con tanta naturalidad, seguimos preguntándola. Nos habló de Padre Pío, nos habló de cartas que escribía a gente sin saber direcciones, nos habló con una naturalidad tremendamente pasmosa sobre el cariño de la Virgen hacia todos y cómo la Virgen la decía cuando una palabra se escribía con "b" o se escribía con "v".

We were intrigued by these things that the girl told us so naturally, so we continued questioning her.  She talked to us about Padre Pío, about how he wrote letters to people without knowing their addresses, about the tremendous, marvelous love the Virgin has for all of us and how the Virgin told her when a word should be written with a “b” or a “v.”

Nosotros comenzamos a notar un algo en esta conversación de la niña y a palpar muy de cerca el cariño de la Virgen, que es una cosa que se me quedó grabada y comenzé desde aquel entonces a ver a la Virgen muy junto a todos y, como la niña nos comentaba, ver como la Virgen se preocupa no solamente de nuestro bien espiritual sino hasta de nuestro bien material, de nuestro dolor de cabeza, de todas estas cosas que una madre se preocupa de sus niños y de sus hijos, así la Virgen, pero mucho más, se preocupa de nosotros y desde entonces he comenzado a verlo y creo que cada día es más real.

We began to note something in this conversation with the girl and to experience a closer sense of the Virgin’s love, which is something that was left engraved in me. It is from this that I began to see that the Virgin is very close to everyone, and, as the child commented to us, we see how the Virgin is concerned not only with our spiritual well-being but also our material well-being, our headaches, all of the things a mother worries about for her children.  The Virgin is like this, but much more.  She worries about us.  Since then, I began to see and believe that it is more real each day.

Llegó el momento más emocionante para nosotros cuando Conchita fue a Comulgar allí mismo junto a nosotros. Las niñas pequeñas estaban retiradas. Conchita dió unos pasos, nos miró y en esto se cae de rodillas. Un fuerte golpe como si fuera de una rigidez de muerto, digamos así. Comenzó a extasiarse, girando la cabeza hacia atrás de una manera extraordinaria. Nosotros, asustados los tres, caímos de rodillas. Nos entró un santo temor y un santo gozo que no se puede explicar.

The most exciting moment for us arrived when Conchita went to receive the Sacrament, there next to us.  The little girls had retreated.  Conchita walked a few steps, looked at us, and suddenly fell on her knees.  She hit very hard as though it was the rigidity of death, as we say.  She began the ecstasy, turning her head up in an extraordinary manner.  The three of us were afraid and we fell on our knees.  We were filled with a holy fear and a holy joy that cannot be explained.

Entonces esta niña empezó a santiguarse, oí que decía unas palabras, la ví santiguarse y la ví que abría la boca. En aquel momento yo abriendo los ojos hasta el máximo, mirando por todos los sitios, especialmente hacia arriba a ver si observaba al Ángel que ella nos había dicho que le iba a dar la Comunión. Ví nada más que a la niña extasiada pero yo creo que con los ojos del alma se veía algo que yo tampoco sé explicar.

Then this girl began to bless herself with the sign of the cross, and I heard her speak some words and I saw her bless herself and open her mouth.  In that moment, I opened my eyes very wide and looked everywhere, especially up high to see if I could see the Angel that she had told us was going to give her Communion.  I saw nothing but the child in ecstasy, but I believe I saw something I can’t explain with the eyes of my soul.

La niña abrió la boca, sacó su lengua y cuando sacó su lengua tuve intención de poner la mano delante de la lengua, no sé por qué, pero me dió un temor tremendo, con una alegría inmensa, mirando a ver si notaba alguna cosa.

The girl opened her mouth, stuck out her tongue, and when she stuck out her tongue I intended to put my hand in front of it, but I don’t know why, I was filled with a tremendous fear, and a great happiness, looking to see if I noticed anything.

Como digo, con los ojos de la cara no veía nada pero con los ojos del espíritu sí se notaba allí algo. Total que la niña sacó la lengua, cerró la boca y yo la oí perfectamente tragar algo que yo no ví. Entonces la niña, después de todo esto, se nos acercó. Primero se acercó a mí después de hablar unas palabras con aquel Ángel que ella veía y comenzó a tocarme.

As I say, with the eyes of the face I saw nothing, but with the eyes of the spirit I noticed something there.  The girl stuck out her tongue and I heard her swallow something that I didn’t see.  Then the girl, after all of this, came near us.  First she came near me after saying a few words to that Angel she was seeing.  She started to touch me.

Yo me asusté, de rodillas, sin poderme levantar, me retiré arrastrándome de rodillas para que la niña no me tocara. Yo notaba alguna cosa misteriosa, pero la niña insistía hasta que tomó el Escapulario del hábito. Entonces yo, con las manos cruzadas encima del escapulario, hice fuerza para que la niña no levantara el escapulario porque yo notaba que lo alzaba hacia el cielo.

I was scared, on my knees, and I couldn’t get up.  I withdrew, dragging on my knees so the girl wouldn’t touch me.  I noticed something mysterious, but the girl persisted until she touched the Scapular on my habit.  Then, I, with my hands crossed in front of the Scapular, used my strength so that the girl would not lift my scapular because I noted that she lifted it toward heaven.

Yo, sin saber qué era aquello ni qué no era, comencé a hacer fuerza pero fue inútil porque la niña levantó mi escapulario como si fuera un cáliz, con una devoción extraordinaria lo elevó a cierta altura, unos segundos en el aire, lo dejó caer suavemente, musitó unas palabras y se acercó a otro compañero. La niña siempre sin mirar a la persona sino a una cosa, a una imagen invisible, se acercó de rodillas lo mismo al otro compañero, hizo el mismo ademán, habló unas palabras, dejó el escapulario y volvió al otro compañero.

I, without knowing what it was, began to use my strength, but it was useless.  The girl lifted my Scapular as though it were a chalice, with extraordinary devotion.  She lifted it to a certain height and kept it there for a few seconds before letting it drop smoothly.  She said some words and then approached another one of my companions.  The girl did this without looking at the person, but always looking at something, at an invisible image, and she went on her knees to the other companion and did the same thing she’d done to me.  She spoke some words, put the scapular down, and then went to the next companion.

Pero el tercer compañero, mas frío, hizo un lío con los tres Escapularios del hábito para ver si la niña presentaba el mismo escapulario dos veces. Sin mirar mas que a la imagen que ella veía en el cielo, dejó el Escapulario besado, uno y otro y se quedó con el Escapulario que no había presentado. Hizo el mismo ademán, después de unos instantes la niña siguió extasiada, se hizo la señal de la cruz como yo nunca lo he visto, estuvo unos instantes más y en esto el éxtasis había pasado.

But the third companion, a bit more coldblooded, tangled the Scapulars to see if the girl would present the same Scapular twice.  Without looking at anything but the image the child saw in the sky, she released the kissed Scapulars from the other and kept the one that had not been presented.  She did the same thing and after several instants, the girl continued in ecstasy. She made the sign of the cross like I have never seen.  She was there a few seconds longer and then the ecstasy passed.

La niña se levantó como si no hubiera ocurrido nada. Nosotros asustados, yo creo que teníamos de todos los colores, comenzamos a abordarla, casi sin poder hablar:

¿Ya has comulgado?.

Sí, ya he comulgado.

The girl got up as though nothing had happened.  We were so frightened that we must have turned to many colors, but we began to approach her, although we could barely speak:

You have already received Communion?

Yes, I have already received Communion.

En esto hemos de aclarar que nosotros llevamos una máquina fotográfica, ninguno de los tres la entendíamos, y no nos acordamos ninguno de haber usado la máquina para hacernos sendas fotografías. Es curioso porque las fotografías las tenemos y en las fotos hemos salido los tres, nos hemos pasado la máquina de uno a otro y no nos enteramos ninguno de los tres de cuando hicimos estas fotos.

Here we must clarify that we had brought a camera with us, but none of us understood it; and none of us remember having used the camera to take such photographs.  It is curious because we have the photographs and in the pictures the three of us came out, we have obviously passed the camera from one to the other and none of us knew when we took the pictures.

Volvimos a las preguntas a Conchita y le dijimos:

We continued questioning Conchita and we said:

¿Por qué cogiste los Escapularios y por qué los elevabas al Cielo?

Me los pidió el Ángel para besarlos.

“Why did you take the Scapulars and lift them up to Heaven?”

“The Angel asked to kiss them.”

¿Has hablado con el Ángel?.

Sí.

Y ¿qué te ha dicho? ¿Te dijo algo de nosotros?.

─ Have you spoken with the Angel?

─ Yes.

─ And what did he tell you?  Did he say something about us?

─ El Ángel ya sabía que estaban ustedes aquí y me ha dicho que he venido yo aquí porque estaban ustedes y también me dijo que el Señor y la Virgen están contentos con ustedes.

─ The Angel already knew that you were here and he told me that I came because you were here.  He also told me that the Lord and the Virgin are happy with you.

─ ¿Te ha dicho algo para cada uno?

─ Sí, me ha dado un mensaje para cada uno.

─ Pues dínoslo.

─ Did he tell you something for each one of us?

─ Yes, he gave me a message for each one.

─ Well, tell us.

─ No, que tengo que decírselo primero a la Virgen, porque el Ángel me dice que lo diga antes a la Virgen.

─ Entonces nos los dirás.

─ Sí, sí, ya se lo diré.

─ No, I have to tell it to the Virgin first because the Angel told me to tell it to the Virgin first.

─ Then you will tell us.

─ Yes, yes, then I will tell you.

─ ¿Y tú sabes de quién era el primero de los Escapularios que presentaste?

─ El primero era del hermano Luis.

─ ¿Y el segundo?.

─ Do you know to whom belonged the first Scapular you presented?

─ The first was Brother Luis’s.

─ And the second?

─ Del hermano Miguel.

─ ¿Y el tercero?.

─ Del hermano Juan.

─ The second belonged to Brother Miguel.

─ And the third?

─ It belonged to Brother Juan.

Esto lo dijo pensando antes un poco como queriendo recordar. Hemos de advertir que antes del éxtasis le dijimos de una manera rápida nuestros nombres al preguntarla qué Ángel solía darla la Comunión y al contestar que San Miguel aprovechamos para indicar el nombre del hermano Miguel. A renglón seguido los dos restantes la dimos nuestros nombres para que pidiera por nosotros.

She said this while thinking a little like trying to remember.  We have to warn that before the ecstasy, we told her our names in a fast way when we asked her which Angel was going to give Communion. When she answered St. Michael, we took the opportunity to point out the name of Brother Miguel (Michael).  Then the other two of us gave our names so that she would pray for us.

─ ¿Cómo viste el Ángel?.

─ Con vestido azul, alas rosa y el pelo un poco largo con las puntas rizadas hacia arriba.

─ How did you see the Angel?

─ He wears a blue robe, has pink wings, and long hair with the ends curled up.

Al decir esto, ella misma hizo el ademán sobre su cabello para hacer la descripción más gráfica. Durante la conversación, tanto antes como después del éxtasis, continuamente nos llama "padres". Una de la veces, después del éxtasis al llamarnos de nuevo "padres" la indicamos que éramos "hermanos". Al oír esto ella exclamó:

When she said this, she curled her own hair up to make a more graphic description.  During the conversation, before as well as after the ecstasy, she continually called us “fathers.”  One of the times, after the ecstasy when she called us “fathers” again, we indicated that we were “brothers.”  When she heard this, she exclaimed:

─ ¡Ah!, por eso el Ángel me dijo "los hermanos". Entonces yo le dije que no eran hermanos míos y el Ángel se sonrió.

Con esto quedó todo aclarado el por qué el Ángel nos llamó hermanos.

Comenzamos de nuevo el regreso hacia el pueblo y volvimos de nuevo al tema del mensaje cuando íbamos con ella.

─ “Oh! That is why the Angel told me ‘the brothers.’  I told him that you weren’t my brothers and the Angel smiled.”

After this, it was clear why the Angel had called us brothers.

We began to return to the village once again and we talked about the theme of the message while we went with her.

─ “Oye Conchita, ¿el mensaje es grave?”

─ “Y ¿qué es grave?”

─ “Pues que si es bueno o malo.”

─ “Conchita, is the message serious?”

─ “And what is serious?”

─ “Well, is it good or bad.”

─ No, no, es bueno.

─ Pero nos lo vas a decir de verdad.

─ Sí, sí, de verdad.

─ “No, no, it’s good.”

─ “But you are truly going to tell it to us?”

─ “Yes, yes, truly.”

Hemos de advertir que no la dimos nuestra dirección. Esto es para aclarar que uno de los hermanos, un mes o dos después de este acontecimiento, recibió su mensaje.

We have to point out that we didn’t give our address.  This is to clarify that one of the brothers received her message about a month or two after this event.

Terminadas nuestras preguntas, nos bajamos hacia el pueblo con la niña y al pasar por la pendiente situada entre los pinos y el pueblo nos dice la niña: “por aquí, por entre estas piedras, dicen que bajo de espaldas.” Esto lo decía con una ingenuidad extraordinaria.

When we finished our questions, we went down towards the village with the girl and as we passed by the steep area situated between the Pines and the village the girl said to us:  “they say that here, among these rocks, I go down backwards.”  She said this with extraordinary child-like ingenuousness.

Llegamos al pueblo, tomamos una pequeña refección y regresamos a nuestra residencia, también con una gran suerte, y dando gracias al Señor por aquello que inundó nuestra alma de alegría.

We arrived at the village, took a little refreshment, and then returned to our residence, which was lucky. We gave thanks to the Lord for inundating our souls with happiness.

La gente nos preguntaba una y otra vez, nos rodeaba como personas que hubiéramos tenido algo así como un arrebato al tercer cielo. Nos pareció extraño, toda aquella expectación ante nosotros, y para evitar mayores complicaciones nos bajamos camino abajo para encontrar las combinaciones correspondientes y llegarnos a Celorio a la noche, antes de empezar los Ejercicios a las siete y media.

The people asked us again and again and they surrounded us as though we were persons who had been raptured to the third Heaven.  It seemed strange to us, all of this expectation before us.  In order to avoid greater complications we went down the road to make the necessary connections to go back to Celorio at night, before beginning the Exercises at seven thirty.

No sabemos cómo fue, llegamos al pueblo inmediato, tuvimos un coche a nuestra disposición, hicimos auto-stop y antes de las siete y media de la tarde estábamos en Celorio, en nuestra residencia, para comenzar los Santos Ejercicios.

We do not know how it happened; we arrived at the village immediately, took a car that was at our disposal, we made an auto-stop, and before seven thirty that evening we had arrived in Celorio, at our residence, ready to begin the Holy Exercises.

Los Ejercicios, por supuesto, fueron estas cosas que nos ocurrieron en Garabandal en aquella fecha memorable.

Of course, the Exercises were those events that had happened to us at Garabandal on that memorable date.

Aparte de este relato, quiero contar como nos contaba esta niña la muerte del Padre Andréu, y cómo nos decía con ingenuidad el haber hablado con él en alemán, en inglés, en francés y en griego. Nos habló de cómo la Virgen las besaba, cómo las acariciaba. Ella nos dió una lección de trato de la Virgen hacia sus hijos y cómo los hijos tienen que hablar con la Virgen.

Apart from this story, I want to tell how this girl told us about the death of Fr. Andreu.  She told us with ingenuousness about speaking with him in German, English, French, and Greek.  She told us how the Virgin kissed them and caressed them.  She told us a lesson of how the Virgin treats her children and how the children should treat the Virgin.

Para nosotros, estos fueron los Ejercicios mejores que hemos hecho en la vida.

For us, these were the best Exercises that we have made in our lives.

Muchas cosas más quisiera contarles como es las cartas que el Padre Pío escribió a esta niña y cómo coincidía lo del Padre Pío con lo que en la actualidad se está realizando. Esta niña nos decía que la Copa estaba rebosando, que la Virgen quería mucho al mundo y que la Virgen quería evitar un gran Castigo. Que rezáramos mucho y que pidiéramos sobre todo por los religiosos y sacerdotes.

There are many more things I would like to tell, like how Padre Pío wrote letters to this girl, and how what Padre Pío said is in accordance with what is happening.  The girl told us that the Cup was overflowing, that the Virgin loved the world very much and she wanted us to avoid the great Chastisement.  She told us to pray often and to pray especially for the religious and priests.

En aquel entonces nosotros no entendíamos nada de esto que la niña nos decía y sin embargo, después de algunos años, nos hemos dado cuenta cómo aquellos Mensajes de la Virgen desgraciadamente algunos se están cumpliendo porque el mundo, como Ella dice, no hacía caso a lo que la Madre quería evitar. Hablaba con nosotros temas de una elevación espiritual extraordinaria, una niña que entonces tendría doce años, trece años, una niña que apenas sabía leer ni apenas sabía escribir.

At that time, we didn’t understand any of what the girl told us.  Nevertheless, after a few years, we realized that these messages the Virgin gave are unfortunately happening because the world, as she said, does not pay attention to what the Mother wants us to avoid.  She spoke with us about topics of extraordinary spiritual elevation for a child who was only twelve or thirteen years old, a child who barely knew how to read or write.

Yo quisiera trascribir el diálogo de hora y media con esta niña, pero solamente quisiera corroborar que esto que nos ha ocurrido a nosotros no es precisamente por méritos sino todo lo contrario.

I would love to transcribe the hour and half dialogue with this child, but I only want to point out that this had not occurred to us because of our merits, on the contrary.

La Madre nos dió aquello que nosotros necesitábamos. Seguramente fue un aldabonazo muy fuerte porque anteriormente no hacíamos caso a sus caricias.

The Mother gives us what we need.  Surely it was a strong blow because prior to that we were not paying attention to her caresses.
