Las Apariciones de
la Virgen María en San Sebastián de Garabandal
018 Testimonio de Avelina González.
The Apparitions of the Virgin Mary in
San Sebastian de Garabandal
018 Testimony of Avelina González
Me, such joy, such a thing, I did not know what was happening to me. I could not think about anything else but the Virgin. I am in love with the Virgin. Oh, yes, yes! My relationship with the Virgin is not something that can be explained. I dream with Her, speak with Her; it is a great thing for me.
Avelina
Avelina found out through her daughters and her son José
Antonio what was happening in the village. At the beginning of the
Apparitions, she was in
Me
no escribía.
Entonces dije yo a Jose Antonio: vete y llama a
I stayed there in
─
Pues entonces también será para tí.
─
Pues sí, pero para usted más.
He took the bicycle and soon he returned very happy and I said:
─ “You are returning very happy; what happened, why are you so happy?
─ “Oh! I bring something of great happiness for you.”
─ “Then it will also be for you.”
─ “Well, yes, but more for you.”
Yo
I was sewing and there were many people there so he didn’t want to tell me the news. While the neighbors were there in the house, he wouldn’t tell me anything. I wanted them to leave. They left, and I entered the house and he told me.
─
¿No sabe madre?
─
¿Qué pasó?
─
mensajes.
─ “You don’t know, mother?”
─ “What happened?”
─ “An Angel has appeared to four girls in the village.
─ Oh, Mother! Then the Virgin will soon come, because the Angels bring messages.
─
Pues no sé.
Entonces
escribe Margarita, y dice,
─ Well, I don’t know. I know that someone from the village is telling Blanca now.
─ Our
Lady of
Then Margarita
wrote and said:
─
¡Ay
Dios mío!, yo estaba que no dormía. Pensando en venir y que no dormía.
─ “Well, I have not written because we are in glory here and we don’t think about eating or sleeping. I am with the oldest girl.”
There they were in the “calleja” (dirt road to the pines) without remembering to eat or sleep or anything.
─ “We have passed into the glory here, and we don’t think about anyone.”
Oh, my God! I didn’t sleep. I was thinking about coming and I didn’t sleep.
─
No puedo deciros
más por carta, esto es una preciosidad. No puede ser ponerlo por escrito. Y
─ When I come home, I will tell
you many things that are impossible to say in a letter. Almost an entire
village has come from
Yo
estaba que no dormía pensando en venir.
Vine
─
¿Oyes?, ¿A donde llevas mis maletas?
I could not sleep because I was thinking about going.
I went on the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. I arrived in Cosío that day. A boy there came and took my suitcases because I arrived late at night. I said to myself, who is this boy who is taking my suitcases.
─ “Excuse me, where are you taking my suitcases?”
─
A mi casa.
Era
un sobrino que se llama Manuel Jesús.
─
¡Ah, yo no me quedo!
─
─ “To my house.”
He was a nephew named Manuel Jesús.
─ “Oh, I am not staying!”
─ “That you are not staying!
It is the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, and you are not going to stay
in our house! You can’t go up
to San Sebastián tonight.
─
¡Que subo es cierto!
Estaba
─ Of course I will go up!
Someone who lived in Cosío was there and he said to me:
─ Go, for you’re bound to have
plenty of people, all the way from here to
─ I won’t sleep tonight; do not make me stay here. I’m going to go.
─ No, aunt, you have to stay here in our house.
Y
me quedé.
Yo
llegué el 17 por la mañana.
So I stayed. They wouldn’t let me leave, so I had to stay. The next day, I woke up early at dawn so I could go up. The Virgin had already come on July 2nd. I arrived on July 17th in the morning.
Yo,
unas alegrías, una cosa, no sabía qué me pasaba. No pensaba nada más que en la
Virgen.
I was very happy; I didn’t know what was happening to me. I didn’t think about anything but the Virgin. I am very devoted to the Virgin. Oh, yes, yes! My relationship with the Virgin is something I can’t explain. I dream about her, speak with her; it is a great thing for me.
Y
Y si alguna noche me
And then… being with the girls… To wake up with them,
and to climb up to the Pines, and coming down without a lantern in my
hands… I don’t know who helped me. I went up with them, came down
with them, and I stayed up nights with them without going to bed. And if
some night I went to bed because I was very tired and didn’t go out, I could
still hear them outside and I had to sit up to pray a Rosary in bed. How
could I sleep without praying a Rosary to the Virgin, even when I had already
prayed one in Church! I would
attend the Rosary recitation every evening.
Era
─
Sí, si que le curo pero no sana.
It was a tremendous satisfaction to go with the girls, and to pray the Rosary with them; it was very exciting for me.
On one occasion, there was something wrong with my lip. It had been that way for three months. They said to me:
─ “Oh, Avelina, something is going to happen to you! Why don’t you treat it?”
─ “Yes, yes, I do treat it, but it doesn’t heal.”
No
I could not even pray because my lip was so bad, but I prayed the Rosary and as soon as I had finished the Hail Holy Queen, I passed over it the cross from the Rosary that Jacinta had given the Virgin for her to kiss and with such emotion I said to the Virgin:
─ “Oh, heal me, because if you don’t heal me, I will not be healed!”
I was cured and it has been fourteen years since then. It was a great miracle for me.
Me pongo
I told this to a woman and one night I went to look for
fresh water at the fountain in front of Aniceta’s house even though there was
water in the house. I took a candle since it was very dark, and when I
passed, I heard a voice that said: “this is her.” I went to take
the water and a man and a woman arrived. The man touched me and I said:
─
─
Cierto, certísimo.
─
Pues cuénteselo a mi marido.
─ “Excuse me, sir, who gave you permission to touch my face like that?” Then the woman said:
─ “Wasn’t it you who was cured?”
─ “Yes, ma’am.”
─ “You told a lady and I was observing you.”
─ “Of course, of course.”
─ “Then, tell it to my husband.”
“Ahora
“Now you see,” - said the woman to the man that didn’t believe and she wanted to bring him here so he would see. Why did it occur to me to go look for water if there was water in the house? It was the Virgin who brought me there. The man didn’t believe and his wife wanted to bring him where I was so he would see and believe.
I had a large Cross and one day I said to Maria Dolores:
─ Maria Dolores, will you give this Cross for the Virgin to kiss?
─ Yes, ma’am.
Me
She carried my Cross and I watched her give it to the people to kiss and give it to the Virgin because she always gave it to the Virgin first. I have the Cross here; it is like gold in a rag. There were many people and she gave it to everyone to kiss.
I am very excited about this Crucifix because I believe that it is very valuable. It is Jesus Christ, he’s been kissed by his Mother, it is very valuable to me.
Estuvieron
Vinieron Conchita
y Loli en éxtasis. Loli estuvo otra noche también sola. Por cierto que aquella
noche lloramos mucho, éramos mi hija y yo.
They were in the room and in the living room where she had a bed then. Conchita and Loli came in ecstasy. Loli had spent the other night alone. As a matter of fact, that night my daughter and I cried a lot.
Ceferino,
Tenía yo a dormir
─
¡Ay! no me diga Avelina.
─
Sí, sí, vinieron y la pusieron.
Ceferino, her father, went up with her, and the other people stayed outside. Then Loli arrived and entered into the room. She made crosses on the pillows. Pedro, a good person, was sleeping there, and I said:
─ Pedro doesn’t know that Loli and Conchita came in ecstasy and made a Cross on his pillow.
─ Oh! Don’t tell me, Avelina.
─ Yes, yes, they came and they made a cross.
Otra
hablar y hablar. Empezamos Tina y yo a llorar.
Another night, Loli came with people, but the people stayed downstairs. Loli went up and her father, Ceferino, went with her.
She began to speak with the Virgin in the bed where my husband had died. She spoke and spoke. Tina and I began to cry.
─
Pero ¿por qué lloráis?, dijo Ceferino.
─
─ “Why are you crying?” asked Ceferino.
─ “Oh, my God, I don’t know what Loli is saying! What is she saying? Who is she speaking with? With the Virgin, but what is she telling her? Oh, my God!”
Mi
My husband died a martyr. They cut off one leg and
almost the other. He suffered horrors with such patience! I was
afraid that he would despair out of pain. My husband would say:
“Why does my God have me here. Have I been such a bad person that I
should suffer so much? Why
doesn’t he take me?”
A
He felt sorry for me because I suffered very much. During the day, I worked and during the night, since he didn’t sleep either did I. I would pray to the holy souls so he would not despair. I spent many nights praying so that he would not despair from the pain. To me, he was a very good man.
Aquella
noche María Dolores estuvo hablando un rato y venga a hablar y nosotras venga a
llorar.
Estuvo
mucho rato.
That night, Maria Dolores was speaking for a while and when she spoke, we cried. Ceferino said: “Don’t cry. Why do you cry?”
She didn’t know where my husband had died. Loli was very young, very small, how would she know? She spoke for awhile, and I was very emotional when I saw her because she seemed like an angel. Loli was very beautiful in ecstasy, and she looked like an angel. She was there a long time.
No
We could not hear because we were crying. Ceferino could hear some because he was at the girl’s side. She was there for awhile, and then she left and we went behind.
One night, Blanca said to me: “I want to go with a
girl, at her side.” Maria Cruz was going to give the Cross to a sick
person to kiss, and Blanca went by her side the whole time. When she was
coming by to
─
─ “Cure her, cure her. Are you going to cure her? Yes, you are going to cure her…oh, how good that you are going to cure her!”
I was praying the Rosary on the balcony. I did not leave that night because my grandson was in the house.
The sick girl was cured, and they told her before that she had to trust, that the Virgin had said she was going to cure her and that the girl had also had a lot of trust in the Virgin.
─
Voy a salir.
─
¡No salga madre, nosotros estamos muy cansados!. Pepe y yo estamos muy
cansados.
One night, I stayed in Tina’s house and I said:
─ “I’m going to go out.”
─ Don’t leave, mother, we are very tired. Pepe and I are very tired. Pepe is very tired from working so much. Don’t go mother, it is foggy, raining, and very dark.
─
salir!
─ “Where are you going to go, mother? You might fall somewhere.”
─ “I’m going out tonight!” But, I don’t know why, but I had to go out that night!
linternas.
─
Señora, ¿se ha hecho daño?
─
No, no.
Yo
bajaba en albarcas (madreñas), no me pasó nada.
─
Siéntese aquí con nosotras.
I left and when I arrived at Ceferino’s house, where there were slippery rocks, I fell there. I wasn’t injured, but I fell. I had not seen anyone, but then two lanterns shone on me.
─ Are you injured, ma’am?
─ No, no.
I went down in house slippers and nothing happened to me.
─ Sit here with us.
Eran
They were outsiders from Comillas. I had been in Comillas when I was eight years old. I was at the baptism of a little girl, the niece of the Marquis of Comillas, Don Claudio. By the way, I don’t know if Don Claudio was a saint, but my mother told me that he gave so many alms that he became poor.
At that moment, their mother arrived. They were the daughters and their mother was the Marquise of Comillas and the girl was the same child whose baptism I’d attended. She was the niece of Don Claudio and those girls were her daughters. It seemed that the Virgin wanted me to leave that night so I would meet them.
Otra
Another night many people came, it was on October 18, the
day of the first Message. Many people came, and my house was full.
I went to the Rosary in the afternoon. My daughter who is married in
Llegan
A grandmother, a mother, and an invalid girl arrived. The invalid was fifteen years old and as a result of infantile paralysis, she fit in a cradle. When I came, I found a bed in my doorway that was well made and a little girl. I said:
─
─ “Tomasa, why is this little girl in the doorway?”
The women said:
─ “God will repay you for a charity like this. We are very happy here.”
─ “My daughter has such a kind heart!”
─
─ “I cannot tolerate for her to be down here! I am going to bring her to a room that I have, even if my own children have to stay in the barn.”
I searched for a large cradle that a neighbor lady gave me, and I put it in a room and I put the child in the cradle. The daughters told their mother:
─ “You should stay with the girl, since there are so many people.”
The grandmother, the child and I stayed. I said: “we are going to pray a Rosary.” When we had finished praying the Rosary, I heard a noise because the people were up at the Pines, for the Message was taking place there at the Pines. We heard the child clap.
─
─ Why does the child clap? What has she seen or heard?
I went out to the balcony and I saw the four girls in ecstasy looking at the balcony; they were alone.
─ Oh, mother! I said to the grandmother, the four girls are in ecstasy, looking like this, with their hands like this.
Ceferino arrived first, very tired from running, and the girls came so quickly that the people could not run and keep up with them.
It was a great miracle, a great one, to see the girls alone. The people told us later: “What luck you had! We were not able to see them like that, but you have.” This was precisely because we stayed in the house with the child. What excited me most was when the child clapped because of the presence of the Virgin. My children slept in the barn and the kitchen, and we gave plenty of clothes to the people that were soaked and they were dripping.
This was also told by young boy who was an outsider. Fr. Valentín was there and I said to María: Look, look, there is a low star moving over Ceferino’s house.
It was moving so low and I believe it was going to rest on the roof of Ceferino’s house, the house where he lived later, and it continued moving right towards the Church tower, and it passed very low there. This I saw it well and this boy and other people saw it too. Fr. Valentín, the pastor, said to the boy: “Quiet, quiet, what do you know?”
Yo
emocionadísima, dije a Don Valentín:
─
I was very excited and I said to Fr. Valentín:
─ “What’s happening? I saw it too, I saw it too! Fr. Valentín, don’t say that it’s not true, because I saw it too.”
Then everyone believed me because I was a grown up, an older person. It was a large star and it was there because of an ecstasy of the girls.
One day, María Dolores went up to the choir loft of the Church, and Julia, her mother, prayed to the Blessed Sacrament that her daughter would not throw herself off. It was as though the Virgin wanted to attract her there, as though she was flying. Obeying what her mother asked, she went down the stairs and nothing happened.
At the beginning, they gave stones for the Virgin to kiss, but after that, they only gave religious objects. One day I said to Jacinta:
─
“I think you have given stones to the Virgin to kiss to give them to people. I would also like to have one as a memento.”
─ “We stopped doing that, but if the Virgin asks us to do it again, I’ll give you one.”
¡Virgen! dije yo, he de
After some time had passed, we went up to the Pines with the girls in ecstasy. They had a small mountain of stones there and they gave them to the Virgin to kiss. I was there and Jacinta said: “This one is for Avelina.” “Virgin!” - I said, I must know it that one was truly mine. Among so many that they had been given her to kiss, it was truly a curious stone, so I paid really close attention to see if this stone was for me.
Era
It was there next to the Pines and after the ecstasy that she gave various stones to the people and she gave me the same one that she’d said: “This is for Avelina.” I was very excited that she’d given me the very same stone, and that it had been kissed by the Virgin.
vas a traer?... anda, tráemele... ¿me le vas a traer mañana?
One day, after the recitation of Rosary, it was snowing and Mari Cruz fell into ecstasy. She went to the calleja (road to the pines), and her mother went with her. There were only a few of us and the girl said to the Virgin:
─ “Why don’t you bring the Child to me? It has been a long time since you brought him… Are you going to bring him? Come on, bring him… will you bring him tomorrow?”
We could not wait for the next day to see if She would bring the Child. The next day, she brought the Child and Mari Cruz said to the Virgin: “Give him to me… come on, give him to me for a little while.” We passed the night very well. We always had the illusion of seeing and being with the Virgin.
When more than one of the girls was there, they passed the Child from one to the other and they also wore the Virgin’s crown. This was all very well; it was pleasing to see.
Y
Concita a Loli
mí me encantaba.
When the Virgin was very high, they held one another so they could kiss her. Loli, the smallest, held Conchita and lifted her like she weighed nothing. Conchita lifted Loli as well, but since she was taller, it wasn’t as impressive. It was marvelous when they were so loving like this and helped each other kiss the Virgin, and I found it enchanting. They would say goodbye to the Virgin when she was departing, but sometimes she was so high that they lifted each other, it was all so precious! I cannot explain all that we saw. We would need a year to explain it all.
Bajaba
Me dicen,
─
Buenos día s señora.
─
Buenos día s.
─
¿Usted es de aquí?
─
Si, de aquí soy.
─¿Qué,
esto es cuento no?
I was coming down from a field that Tina owns very near the Pines and I encountered three men. They said to me:
─ “Good day, ma’am.”
─ “Good day.”
─ “Are you from here?”
─ “Yes, I’m from here.”
─ “This is all a tale, isn’t it?”
Dijo
─
Bueno, ¿Usted no ha visto ningún éxtasis, verdad?.
─
Ah, no señora, que acabo de llegar.
Then spoke a much older man, with white hair like mine. He said:
─ “I came just to come, but this cannot be true.”
─ “Well, you have not seen an ecstasy, right?”
─ “No, ma’am, I just arrived.”
─
o realidad. Quisiera volver a verle a usted.
─
Porque me dió gana de venir.
─
Pues algo lo llamó aquí, sino no venía.
─ “Then tell me what you think after an ecstasy. After you see one, then tell me if it is a story or reality. I would like to see you again then. Since you are so much older, why did it occur to you to come to this village if you thought it was all a fairytale?”
─ “I just felt like coming.”
─ “Well, something called you here, or you wouldn’t have come.”
A
In the afternoon, there was an apparition and we dropped everything, the hay and everything. Whenever there were Apparitions we didn’t worry about anything else but going to see the girls.
The Apparitions took place in the Church and we arrived at the Church and I went up to the choir loft for a calmer place and better view. The girls were giving the Cross to be kissed and my attention was fixed on this old man.
Entonces
Then they gave him the Cross to kiss and if the man had not sat down he would have fallen from the emotion he felt. He was sitting like this, with his hands on his head. I said, “Something has happened to this man.” When it was all finished, I came down from the choir loft and came up behind the man. I put a hand on his shoulder. I said to him:
─
Y ahora ¿que me dice?
No
era de hablarme de la emoción.
─
─ “And what do you say now?”
He couldn’t speak to me because of the emotion.
─ “Oh, ma’am, oh ma’am.”
It was not possible for him to speak to me. He was like this for awhile, without being able to tell me what had happened to him.
─Ay
“Oh, ma’am, it is the truth! You told me that I had to see it, and that’s true. It is true that the Virgin is here. Nothing like this has ever happened to make me feel this way.”
Conchita and Loli in ecstasy, giving a Crucifix to the Virgin for her to kiss
It would happen like this very often. Those who came to search for the truth with sincerity would receive a great grace and believed. Later we learned that he was a priest; that is what the Virgin told Conchita.
One day they were at the hazelnut trees and María Cruz said: “Oh, my God, I have two calls.” Then the Virgin came and carried her to the Pines at a great velocity. María Cruz is not much into walking. Unlike her mother who walks too much, the daughter does not. But because it was the Virgin who carried her, that day, she didn’t walk, she flew. That is what her companions said.
We often went to pray the Rosary with the girls. One day, we were going with Conchita in the morning, and very few people went down with her. She was going in ecstasy and she hit her head hard. If she had not been in ecstasy, she would have broken her skull. We became worried, such a hard hit for a little girl, she remained smiling. We arrived at the door of the Church. The girl knelt and I knelt next to her. She prayed the Act of Contrition and she received Communion from the hands of the Angel. Then she entered the Church and the ecstasy left. The Virgin often brought them to where the Blessed Sacrament was.
Otra
Another evening, they did not quite arrive in the cuadro and the four girls fell into ecstasy together next to Serafina’s house. There was a Dominican. They didn’t know what to call him, so they called him “the white one.”
We arrived there and the four girls fell on their knees. I was standing and there was a boy next to me who looked at his watch to know the time so he could tell how long they had been kneeling on the stones.
Y
The girls said to the Virgin: “Oh, he is a Dominican…we called him the ‘white one’… now he is going to laugh at us.” They had pronounced ‘Dominican’ with a regional accent. When they said goodbye to the Virgin, they said: “don’t go… why are you going so soon…?”
The Virgin told the girls that she had been there for two hours and they said, “a minute longer…” In the ecstasies, it is as though time doesn’t exist.
Dijo
The boy that had looked at his watch said: “exactly two hours,” like the Virgin told them. “Two hours…oh, a minute longer, the happiness of being with the Virgin made them feel like time hadn’t passed.”
There were many people next to Aniceta’s house and they were awaiting Conchita’s Apparition when I arrived. Conchita came out at great speed; she was not running, she appeared to be flying. A man arrived and said to me:
─
Señora, ¿es usted de aquí?
─
Sí Señor.
─
ahora.
─ “Ma’am, are you from here?”
─ “Yes, sir.”
─ “When the ecstasy ends, this girl will be covered in sweat.”
─ “Those who go with her will sweat a lot. The people will have to ring out the sweat of their shirts if they choose to keep up with her, but I will not be able to. I will walk all I can, but I cannot keep up with her. But I can assure you that she is cleaner than I am now.”
─
y me dice:
─
─ “Ma’am, what are you saying? That cannot be!
─ Well, you’ll see. Maybe her mother will let you see her when she returns to the house.”
The people who had followed her, more likely the young, were very tired and sweaty.
The ecstasy usually ended where it had began and when she returned to the house, the man was excited to see that the girl was as dry as if she had never left the house. He said to me:
─ “Oh, ma’am, she is cleaner than you and me.”
The people said: “Oh, what a race you gave us, Conchita!” The girl said: “Race; I didn’t move from here.” In the ecstasies they could only see the Apparition, and whatever she chose to show them. She was now in the kitchen, and it was there where she began and ended the ecstasy.
─
─ “How can you say that you didn’t move from here with all the running that you made us do.”
It seemed so to her because she was dry and clean, as though she hadn’t moved. Much more than you and I and all those who were out there.
Unas
Such as they were, young girls, they never got any ailments during the ecstasies. At that age, if they spend so much time without sleeping, they couldn’t resist it. However, whether it snowed, rained, or anything, or if it were two in the morning, if the Virgin called them, they went.
Me
One night, we left the Church from the Rosary and when Conchita came down in ecstasy, she had lost a shoe and I found it.
I wanted to see what happened with the shoe, so I kept it. The Virgin told Conchita that she had lost a shoe, and Conchita said, “Where is it? Oh, the lady has it.” I was told this by the woman walking next to her who could hear her.
Digo,
I said, “oh Mother of mine, I cannot reach her.” Her mother, Aniceta, was going with her and I gave the shoe to her mother so that she could put the shoe on her daughter when the ecstasy ended. Many things happened, but this is another thing that happened to me also.
One night, we were with the Apparition and the girls disappeared suddenly onto a street, and we didn’t know where they were. I left ajar the door of my house and suddenly we found them inside, behind the door of my house.
Era
It was a larger door than the one I have now. It was a very large door and they seemed like four little angels behind my door.
We could see them at any time and because of that, when people from outside came we got out of their way for them to see them. This was a charity for those who came and desire to see the girls.
Fr. Luís celebrated at least three Masses here. The last one he celebrated was not by a person, but by a saint. It was not something we commented on after he died, but that same day.
When we left Mass, many of us women got together and commented: “What a Mass Fr. Luís celebrated today! He seemed like a saint!” That same night he died of joy after seeing the Miracle at the Pines.
One time, Loli gave the Virgin a wedding band to kiss that belonged to a woman who had given it to someone else to give to Loli. Loli came in ecstasy to where I was and said: “Oh, this isn’t her… tell me who she is… take me to where she is.” She went to where the woman was and took her hand and placed the ring on the same finger the woman had taken it from.
There were many ecstasies at the Pines also. There is a “little chapel” in one of the Pine trees, and there is where most ecstasies took place. The girls walked through all of the Pines praying the Stations, but most of the ecstasies that I saw were in that one Pine tree. They made the Way of the Cross and walked by all of the Pines, but where they spent the most time was there.
Rezaban
They used to pray very slowly and very well. They would go up to the Pines praying and then they came down. Afterwards, they would sing the Hail Mary and I used to become very excited. When they would spend a night singing, I would get very excited and I had to pray a Rosary; I couldn’t sleep without praying another Rosary. The Virgin wanted me to pray another and I had to pray it. Those girls could get you excited when they prayed the Rosary very slowly and very well.
I was very devoted to the Virgin my whole life. I was eight years old when I listened to a Mission of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, and I had that devotion, even though the Virgin is only one person. Since then, I have said many novenas to Our Lady of Perpetual Help and I pray everyday. I call all of them as Our Lady of Mount Carmel. I always say, “Our Lady of Mount Carmel!”
